Most people assume that once braces are completed, their teeth will stay perfectly aligned.

In reality, teeth can gradually shift over time.

This happens due to natural aging, everyday pressure from chewing, and inconsistent retainer use. Even small forces applied daily can influence tooth position over the years.

You may begin to notice subtle changes such as crowding returning, small gaps reopening, or your bite feeling slightly different.

These changes are common, but they are also easier to manage when addressed early.

Understanding why teeth shift is an important part of maintaining long-term results after orthodontic treatment.

Most people assume aligners push teeth into place.

They don’t.

Clear aligners apply gentle, controlled pressure. That pressure signals your body to remodel bone — breaking it down on one side of the tooth and rebuilding it on the other.

That’s why orthodontic treatment works gradually.
It’s biology, not force.

Consistency matters. Small, planned movements allow your body to adapt safely and predictably.

If you’re considering Invisalign, understanding how it truly works is the first step in making an informed decision.

⚠️ The 30-Second Mouth Check (do this in the mirror tonight)

Most dental issues don’t start with pain — they start with small signs you can spot early:

✅ Red or swollen gums (bleeding often = not “normal”)
✅ Tiny cracks or chips (they can grow over time, especially if you grind)
✅ Flat or worn teeth (often linked to clenching/grinding during sleep)

If you notice any of these, don’t ignore it. Catching things early is usually simpler, quicker, and less stressful.

New: We’ve opened the Art of Smile – Denture & Implant Clinic at Yonge & Eglinton for full-service dentures, dental implants, and implant-supported dentures.

Denture Care Basics — quick wins for comfort
Fresh, comfy fit starts with simple habits:
• Use a denture cleanser (skip regular toothpaste—too abrasive).
• Take them out overnight so tissues can rest; store in water/solution.
• Rinse after meals and gently brush gums, tongue, and palate daily.
• Sore spots, looseness, or food trapping? It may be time for a reline/adjustment.
• Our in-house Denture Clinic handles cleaning, relines, repairs, adjustments and new dentures.

“Small, consistent care keeps dentures comfortable and smiles confident.” — Dr. Hermina

Everyday Dental Myths—busted in 30 seconds.
Think you’re brushing “right”? Quick refresh:
• Hard brushing ≠ better. Gentle + soft bristles protect enamel.
• Mouthwash is a finisher, not a floss substitute.
• Two minutes, twice daily works.
• The best floss time? The time you’ll do it—once a day.

“Small habits today prevent big, costly problems tomorrow.” — Dr. Hermina

Perfect brushing, still bad breath?
Look north. 🤧 Thick post-nasal drip breaks down on the back of your tongue and creates odor gases—mouthwash won’t fix the source.

Spot the signs: throat clearing, bad taste, “mucus feeling,” discolored mucus.
Do this today: saline rinses, daily tongue clean, hydrate, and book a quick breath check—we’ll treat oral causes and coordinate ENT if sinus issues are driving it.

Dental implant? Read this first.
Implants don’t fail overnight—they fail quietly when plaque builds up and checkups get skipped. Here’s your 30-second plan to keep yours strong for years:

• Clean like a tooth: brush 2×/day and clean between the implant and neighbours daily.
• Watch for red flags: bleeding, swelling, bad taste, tenderness, or looseness.
• Habits matter: smoking, poor sugar control, and inconsistent home care raise failure risk.
• Stay seen: hygiene visits catch tiny changes before they damage bone.

Save this 🔖, share it with someone who has an implant, and follow for dentist-approved tips that actually help.

Morning jaw pain? Read this.
Night-time clenching (sleep bruxism) is one of the most common reasons your jaw aches when you wake up. Here’s your quick self-check and relief plan:

• Dull, widespread soreness = muscle overuse (not a broken joint)
• Clues: tenderness by the cheeks/temples, flat or chipped edges, morning headaches
• Calm it: warm compress, gentle jaw stretches, and “lips together, teeth apart” during the day
• Protect it: a night guard reduces strain and shields teeth from grinding wear

GERD (Acid Reflux) & Your Teeth — What to Know 🦷
Acid from the stomach can reach your mouth and soften/dissolve enamel, especially on back teeth. Here’s how to protect your smile:

• Watch for signs: sensitivity, thin or “cupped” biting edges, or yellowing dentin showing through.
• Daily fixes: after acid exposure (reflux, citrus, soda), rinse with water and wait 30–60 minutes before brushing.
• Strengthen enamel: use a fluoride toothpaste, limit acidic drinks, and ask us about enamel-protective care.
• Team up: treating reflux with your doctor + dentist protects both your health and your enamel.

Is charcoal really better for your teeth? Short answer: not really—and it can be rough on enamel if you use it often. Here’s what Dr. Hermina wants you to know:

What the slides show:
• It’s not proven to clean better than regular toothpaste.
• Charcoal can be abrasive → enamel wear over time.
• It mostly lifts surface stains (not deep whitening).
• Many charcoal pastes don’t have fluoride → less cavity protection.
• Safer plan: if you must use it, choose a formula with fluoride and use it rarely. For every day, stick to a trusted fluoride toothpaste.

Pro tip if you still like charcoal:
Use a soft brush, gentle pressure, max 1–2×/week, then brush with a fluoride paste after. Protect that enamel!

Want a whiter smile—safely?
