Therapeutic mouthwashes use antimicrobial ingredients to kill the bacteria that can cause plaque, gingivitis, bad breath, and tooth decay. Depending on the ingredients, these mouthwashes are available over the counter or by prescription.
Mouthwashes without these antimicrobial ingredients are considered to be “cosmetic.” They’re useful for freshening breath, but don’t reduce your risk of cavities or gum disease.

People with diabetes have a greater risk of developing oral health problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. Dry mouth and higher blood sugar levels can contribute to these issues. The good news is that by keeping a close eye on blood sugar levels, brushing and flossing twice a day, and scheduling regular hygiene appointments, people with diabetes can significantly reduce the risks and improve their overall health.

A big shout out to our hygiene team. They are in charge of cleaning your teeth above and below the gumline, including removing plaque in hard-to-reach places, and tartar buildup that you can’t remove at home. They look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health issues or changes in your mouth. If they spot anything during your appointment, they will let the dentist know. Our dental hygienists also keep track of your oral history and provide patient education to assist in your oral health care. To book your next hygiene appointment give us a call!

Brushing and flossing regularly can stop plaque from building up on your teeth, but sometimes you miss a bit of plaque and it hardens into tartar. Left untreated, tartar buildup can damage the connective tissue between the teeth and bone — leading to gum recession, gum disease, and eventual tooth loss. Only a dental hygienist can remove tartar with special tools.

It’s important for children (and grownups) to brush their teeth before going to bed. During the day, your mouth produces saliva to help keep itself clean. You produce less saliva at night. This means it’s very important to brush before bed to make sure your mouth is free from decay-causing sugar and bacteria.

What’s the difference between metal and white fillings?

Metal fillings — or amalgam fillings — have been used to fill cavities for more than 150 years. They are strong, safe, and last a long time. Some patients are concerned about the mercury content of metal fillings, but scientific studies show they are not harmful to your health.

White fillings are made from a composite material that matches the natural shade of the tooth being repaired. They are a popular choice for patients because they are almost unnoticeable once they are in place. Many patients have questions about the different types of fillings, so please ask to learn more.

Brushing with an electric toothbrush requires a slightly different technique than a manual brush. You want to let the spinning action of the electric toothbrush do the brushing for you and gently move it around to connect with all surfaces of your teeth. Ask our hygienist for brushing tips at your next check-up.

When you brush your teeth, are you also brushing your tongue? It’s a prime spot for bacteria to build up. Bacteria on your tongue can also cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your tongue before rinsing, and you’ll feel fresh and clean.

Brushing too hard can wear away enamel. To get the right amount of pressure, try to imagine you’re brushing a tomato. If you brush too hard you’ll strip the tomato of the skin. Light pressure will keep your teeth and the tomato clean and intact.
