When you brush your teeth, are you also brushing your tongue? It’s a prime spot for bacteria to build up. Bacteria on your tongue can also cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your tongue before rinsing, and you’ll feel fresh and clean.

It only takes 24-36 hours for plaque to harden into tartar. Once plaque becomes tartar, it is bonded to the tooth enamel and only a dental professional can remove it. However, flossing once a day, every day can help prevent plaque from hardening into tartar.

A bridge is a great way to replace one or more missing teeth by literally “bridging the gap” between your remaining teeth.

Using the teeth on either side of the gap as supports, we secure a fixed bridge made up of realistic-looking artificial crowns that will need to be brushed and flossed, just like natural teeth.

Flossing is so important for removing plaque and bacteria that your toothbrush can’t reach, but are those plastic floss picks really as good as a standard piece of dental floss?

Let’s look at it this way ...

The proper length for a piece of dental floss is from your hand up to your shoulder, and this is so you’re able to use a fresh section as you work your way around your mouth. A floss pick only provides one small length of floss, which means you’re not able to use a clean section as it begins to shred or pick up particles.

Traditional dental floss wins this round, but we still believe there is a time and a place for floss picks. They’re convenient for keeping in a purse or desk at work, and they’re often easier to maneuver — which means they could be the difference between someone flossing or not flossing, and we certainly want to see everyone flossing!

When wisdom teeth are impacted, it means they are prevented from growing in properly. This may be caused by a physical barrier, such as other teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems such as gum disease, decay, infections, cysts, or tumours.

If your wisdom teeth haven’t grown in, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are impacted. The teeth could simply be slow to develop or missing entirely. Every patient is different, so we examine the mouth and take X-rays to determine if the wisdom teeth are present and impacted. Visit our website for more information: citydentalcenter.ca.

There are a few things you can do to get some temporary relief for a toothache.

1) Try rinsing with warm salt water. If this makes it worse, try rinsing with cold water. Depending on the problem, cold water might feel better than warm water.
2) Floss around the problem tooth, as there may be food stuck. Remember to be gentle and not to force the floss between the teeth.
3) Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
4) Rub an over-the-counter antiseptic containing benzocaine or clove oil onto the affected tooth and gum to numb the pain.
5) Place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek.

What are shark teeth? Shark teeth refer to a child having two rows of teeth in their mouth: the original primary teeth (baby teeth) and the incoming permanent teeth. If your child is experiencing this, give us a call, and we’ll take a look to make sure your child’s teeth are growing in properly.

A big shout out to our hygiene team. They are in charge of cleaning your teeth above and below the gumline, including removing plaque in hard-to-reach places, and tartar buildup that you can’t remove at home. They look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health issues or changes in your mouth. If they spot anything during your appointment, they will let the dentist know.
