New research shows that Porphyromonas gingivalis, a harmful bacterium linked to gum disease, was found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. The bacteria’s toxic enzymes, called gingipains, are also present and may contribute to brain damage. In lab tests on mice, these enzymes worsened brain conditions by increasing harmful proteins and damaging brain cells. However, researchers have developed molecules that block these enzymes, reducing bacterial levels, preventing brain damage, and protecting nerve cells. This suggests that gingipain inhibitors could be a promising treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
