You’re able to remove plaque at home by brushing and flossing, but calculus (hardened plaque, sometimes called tartar) is something that can only be removed by a dental professional. It requires scaling above and below your gumline with special instruments, and you’ll leave with smoother, cleaner teeth and healthier gums.

Do you suspect you have tartar (calculus) build-up? It does happen more easily as we age. Call (416) 927-7600 to schedule a hygiene visit with us, and we’ll take care of you.

Flossing can be tricky with orthodontics. It can rip or stretch on metal brackets and bands, and it can be difficult to thread under the wires and appliances.
Luckily, there is specialty floss designed for people with orthodontics. There is extra-strong floss that won’t break going around a bracket, floss threaders that have a stiff end for slipping through narrow areas, and even spongy expanding floss for cleaning around appliances.

Palatal expanders can be used while children are still growing to help widen the upper jaw. Widening the upper jaw can make room for adult teeth, reduce overcrowding, and correct a crossbite. A palatal expander can improve breathing by opening the oral and nasal passages and allowing the patient to breathe through the nose. If your child is aged 7-10, ask us about this and other early orthodontic treatments! (416) 927-7600

There are a few things you can do to get some temporary relief for a toothache.

1) Try rinsing with warm salt water. If this makes it worse, try rinsing with cold water. Depending on the problem, cold water might feel better than warm water.
2) Floss around the problem tooth, as there may be food stuck. Remember to be gentle and not to force the floss between the teeth.
3) Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
4) Rub an over-the-counter antiseptic containing benzocaine or clove oil onto the affected tooth and gum to numb the pain.
5) Place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek.

Most importantly, give us a call at your earliest convenience. We’ll take a look at that tooth and let you know what’s wrong.
