Regular hygiene appointments are essential to your child’s oral health. We start by reviewing your child’s medical history and asking about any changes in their health. Then we dive into the exam, where we check the condition and development of their teeth, gums and jaw. We will take X-rays as needed.

Then we clean the teeth, removing tartar build-up, polishing and offering fluoride. Sometimes we’ll apply a sealant which is a thin coating that is placed on the teeth to protect them from cavities.

We’ll explain every step of the appointment to your child and how it relates to their dental health. We’ll educate them on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as how to choose tooth-friendly snacks. We’ll finish up by discussing your child’s treatment plan and answering any questions. We do this in a calm and peaceful environment to benefit you and your child.

We look forward to seeing you both at your child’s next hygiene appointment!

When you brush your teeth, are you also brushing your tongue? It’s a prime spot for bacteria to build up. Bacteria on your tongue can also cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your tongue before rinsing, and you’ll feel fresh and clean.

As strange as it may seem, don’t brush immediately after eating! After you eat, the tooth’s enamel is weakened — especially if you ate or drank something acidic, such as soda or citrus fruit. Brushing right away may wear down the enamel. Instead, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to allow your mouth to naturally rebalance.

Gum disease can be a scary topic, but not when you know the facts! Red or swollen gums, bleeding gums, bad breath, or sensitive teeth may indicate the early stages of gum disease (gingivitis). Left untreated, gum disease can lead to shrinking gums, and tooth loss. Caught early, gum disease can be reversed with periodontal treatment and at-home care.

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing before bed, plus regular dental check-ups with professional teeth cleanings are essential in preventing gum disease. Call (416) 484-9944 to book an appointment today!

Do you see frayed bristles on your toothbrush? That means it’s time to pick up a new one! If it’s been less than three months since your last new toothbrush, frayed bristles may also indicate that you’re brushing too hard! Brushing with too hard a brush, or brushing too much force can cause tooth wear, gum recession, and sensitive teeth due to exposed roots. Be sure to choose a soft-bristled toothbrush and focus on using gentle circular movements to help protect your tooth enamel and gums when you’re brushing.

Sugar-free gum and candy with xylitol can help prevent cavities. Unlike sugary gum — which breaks down and creates an acidic, cavity-causing pH in the mouth — xylitol maintains a consistent PH and chewing it helps promote saliva production. Chew a small amount at a time, multiple times throughout your day (up to 10 grams per 24-hour period).
Warning: Xylitol is safe for humans but even small quantities can be deadly for dogs. So keep all products containing xylitol away from your pooch.
