April is Oral Health Month. For us, it’s a moment to pause and reflect on something we believe deeply: that a healthy mouth is one of the most powerful foundations for a healthy life.

Oral health affects far more than your smile. Research continues to show meaningful connections between the health of your gums and conditions like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illness and pregnancy outcomes. When we take care of our mouths, we’re taking care of so much more.

Here are a few things worth keeping in mind this month:

🦷 Brush for a full two minutes, twice a day

🧵 Floss daily — it reaches where your brush simply cannot

💧 Stay hydrated. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defence

📅 Book a professional cleaning if it’s been more than 6 months

🔬 Ask your hygienist about your probing numbers at your next visit

Wherever you are on your oral health journey, there’s always a next step. And we’re here to help you take it.

This April, we invite you to make one small commitment to your oral health. A booking. A habit. A conversation. It all counts.

Happy Oral Health Month from everyone at R U Smiling Dental. 💚

Wisdom teeth giving you anxiety? You’re not alone. 🦷

Here’s something a lot of people don’t know... the Ontario Dental Association recommends that screening for wisdom teeth starts as early as ages 15 to 17. That means if you have a teenager at home, now is a great time to book them in for an assessment.

Why so early? Because wisdom teeth are easier and safer to remove in young adulthood. The roots aren’t fully formed yet, the bone is less dense, and recovery tends to be faster and smoother. The older you are, the more complex the procedure can become.

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. Your dentist will look at your X-rays, the available space in your jaw, the direction they’re growing and the health of the surrounding teeth before making any recommendation. It’s always your call.

But if removal is recommended... the sooner, the better.

Swipe through to see exactly what the process looks like, step by step.

🦷❤️ Your mouth and your heart are more connected than you think.

Research shows that people with untreated gum disease are 2–3x more likely to experience a heart attack or stroke. When bacteria from inflamed gums enter your bloodstream, they can trigger inflammation around your heart and arteries.

The scary part? Most people don’t even know they have gum disease.

Here’s what to watch for:
🔴 Bleeding when you brush or floss
🔴 Red, swollen, or tender gums
🔴 Persistent bad breath
🔴 Gums pulling away from your teeth

The good news? It’s completely preventable and treatable. Regular cleanings at R U Smiling Dental aren’t just about keeping your smile bright. They’re about keeping your whole body healthy. 💙
