Pediatric Oral Health Tip #2

Do you know how much toothpaste to use to brush your child's teeth? Up to the age of 3, only a rice- sized amount of toothpaste is required. Past the age of 3, only a pea- sized amount is required. This applies to adults as well!

There is no need to use toothpaste until their first teeth come out at around 6-12 months of age.

We try to limit the amount of toothpaste that children use, since they are more likely to swallow it. Ingesting too much fluoride can cause a stomach ache. For this reason, we also recommend using special children's toothpastes which contain lower levels of fluoride compared to adult toothpastes!

Pediatric Oral Health tip #1-

Putting your baby to sleep with a bottle full of a sugary fluid like milk, juice or formula, often leads to “baby bottle caries” or “early childhood caries.” Their teeth will be surrounded by sugar for long periods of time while the contents of their bottles sit in their mouth while they sleep. The presence of sugar in the mouth for so long without cleaning causes the tooth structure to break down, leading to tooth decay and cavities.

To prevent this, try not to get your child in the habit of needing a bottle to go to sleep. If they do need the bottle, try to fill it with water or another fluid that is sugar- free to prevent tooth decay!

We are pleased to announce that Bayleaf Dental Centre is officially open!

We have been working tirelessly to make changes to our office and implement new safety protocols to ensure a safe environment for both our patients and staff, under the advisement of the RCDSO and the Ministry of Health. Your health and well- being is our number one priority!

Changes you can expect when coming to see us:

- Pre- screening while booking and confirming appointments
- Wait for us to call you before entering the office to maintain physical distancing and reduce traffic in the office
- All patients will be required to wear a mask into the office (you will be provided with one if you don’t have), and to sanitize your hands upon entry
- Unless it is a parent accompanying a child or a necessary caregiver, all patients are asked to come alone
- Plexiglass barriers at the front desk
- Signing forms to confirm the information collected in the screening
- Recording of your temperature (contact- free) and oxygen saturation levels

Added infection control protocols that have been implemented:

- Diligent disinfecting of surfaces and frequently touched objects
- Staff will be wearing more protective equipment than usual
- High quality air purification systems have been installed in all the rooms
- Staggered appointments to reduce amount of people in the office at one time
- No toys, magazines etc. in the waiting room

Great news! We have been given the go- ahead by the dental college to reopen our doors and operate as normal. Please stay tuned, as we are making changes to our office and protocols to best ensure your health and safety during these uncertain times.
