Do you know what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth? It's important to act quickly. Pick it up carefully and hold it by the top of the tooth — not the root — and store it in a container of milk, and if you don’t have milk, use saliva or water. MOUTHWASH: Rinsing for 30 seconds with a mouthwash formulated for dry mouth can provide soothing moisture for up to four hours. You can use these alcohol-free mouthwashes up to five times daily to ease dryness.

LOZENGES: Dry mouth lozenges are easily popped anytime your mouth feels dry. Many contain a natural sweetener called xylitol, which helps stimulate salvia. Look for these in the diabetic section of the drugstore.

SPRAY: Dry mouth sprays are spritzed directly into your mouth for immediate hydration.

GEL: Dry mouth gels are applied directly to your tongue so you can spread the gel throughout your mouth to lubricate it.

DISCS: Dry mouth discs stick to your teeth or gums to keep your mouth hydrated. They slowly release xylitol, to increase saliva flow, and can even be worn overnight.

When a child loses a primary tooth prematurely, it’s important to see us. Primary teeth play an essential role in the alignment of permanent teeth. If a child loses a tooth too early, a permanent tooth may erupt before it’s ready to fill the space. This might cause problems later on if it’s not the right tooth for the space. We can assess the growth and, in some cases, suggest the use of a space maintainer until the adult teeth are ready to erupt.
