🦷🔥 When SMMS wrap melts in the autoclave, what’s really happening?

It’s easy to assume the sterilization wrap is failing. But in most cases, the wrap isn’t the root cause.

SMMS sterilization wrap is designed to withstand properly validated steam sterilization cycles. So when you see melting, thinning, or distortion, it’s usually a signal that something in the process needs attention.

Common contributing factors include:
• Incorrect cycle parameters (time, temperature, or load type)
• Overloading or improper load configuration
• Excess moisture or inadequate drying
• Equipment maintenance or calibration issues

The wrap is a critical part of the sterilization barrier system but it can only perform as expected when the entire process is functioning correctly.

Instead of asking “why did the wrap fail?”, a better question is often:
👉 “what in the process needs to be adjusted?”

Small workflow changes can make a big difference in performance and compliance.
