🦷✨ Do Baby Teeth Really Need to Be Fixed?

One of the questions we hear from parents is:

“Why do we need to fix a cavity in a baby tooth if it’s just going to fall out?”

It’s a great question! While baby teeth are temporary, they are incredibly important. They help children chew properly, develop speech, maintain space for their permanent teeth, and support healthy oral development.

Leaving a cavity untreated can allow it to grow, become painful, lead to infection, and potentially affect the developing permanent tooth underneath. That’s why protecting baby teeth matters, even when they have an expiration date.

Sometimes, a filling is all that’s needed. But once a child has experienced tooth decay, they can be at higher risk for developing additional cavities. When a baby tooth has significant decay or has lost a lot of its structure, a stainless steel crown, often called a silver crown, may be the best way to protect it.

Think of a stainless steel crown as giving that little tooth a set of superpowers! 🦸‍♂️🦷 It covers and protects the tooth, allowing it to continue doing its important job until it is naturally ready to fall out.

And because it’s October, we’re ready for some super-powered smiles! 🎃🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️ We LOVE seeing our patients come dressed up for their dental visits. Whether they’re a superhero, princess, favourite character, spooky creature or something completely unique, costumes are always welcome in our office!

It's World Chocolate Day! 🍫✨ Let’s be honest, kids are going to eat chocolate, and as a pediatric dental office, we believe in being realistic rather than saying "no" to everything! Our goal isn’t to ban treats entirely, but to share the best ways to protect those little teeth when sweets do happen.

If your child is going to have a sweet treat, chocolate is actually a much better choice than sticky gummies, caramels, or dried fruit. Because chocolate melts quickly, it washes off the teeth much easier instead of sitting in the grooves of the molars for hours.

The trick to enjoying it safely is all about timing and cleanup. Sweets are best enjoyed right after a meal when saliva production is already high, which helps naturally rinse the mouth. Following up with a good brush removes the leftover sugars before they can cause trouble, keeping your child's smile cavity free.
