Sleep apnea (OSA) is most commonly caused by a blocked airway. Typically the tongue collapses against the soft palate, which then collapses against the back of the throat, leaving no space for air to get through causing brief, repeated interruptions to normal breathing during sleep.

The brain reacts with alarm to the lack of air and forces the person to wake up and take a breath. Even though this process is over quickly, it can happen hundreds of times in a single night.

Why Choose Steveston Smiles for Sleep Apnea Treatment
Sleep apnea treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all — and neither is your care.

With over 25 years of clinical experience and a passion for continuing education, Dr. Michele combines trusted expertise with modern treatment options to help you breathe, sleep, and feel better long term.

A common question we get asked at Steveston Smiles is ā€œWHY ARE YOU TAKING MY BLOOD PRESSUREā€?

HERE’S WHY?
Many patients visit their dentist more often than their GP. High Blood pressure is called the silent killer for a reason, most patients have no symptoms and it is caught during a routine screening.

People with High blood pressure are at increased risk for stroke and heart attack.

A third of patients with high blood pressure don’t know it and half of those with HBP don’t take their medication properly
Something as non-invasive as a dental cleaning, can adversely affect a person who already has high blood pressure.

Certain dental freezing is not recommended for patients with HBP

There are many correlations between HBP and oral health as well as other medical conditions such as Diabetes.

Even if your high blood pressure is ā€œwhite coat syndromeā€ we still need to discuss options for lowering it while having certain dental procedures done safely.

Do you get ā€œwhitecoat syndromeā€ at the dental office? What do you find helps?

šŸŽ‰Congrats to another patient on finishing their Invisalign.

🦷As we age, our teeth sometimes get little too cozy and crowd each other. Very much like us, they like to form a tighter-knit team.

Too close for comfort? Here are some ways you can address crowding:

1. Start early!
You can bring children as young as 7 years old to track dental growth. Orthodontists can spot if early intervention is needed and when it may be nest to start braces. It is like giving their teeth a VIP pass to stay in line.

2. Book your consultation!
Even if you start later, you can still visit an orthodontist! It’s still a fantastic step towards a healthier more confident smile. Yes, we may be crowded over time but, technology continues to advance and we’ve got modern techniques that can still achieve amazing results. It’s never too late to invest in a smile you’ll love.

3. Don’t be afraid to share your concerns with us!
Whether you feel it’s for an aesthetic reason or functional issue. If it’s important to you, it’s important to us.

Implants must-know’s āœ…

Here are 5 must know before getting your dental implant:

The most common treatment option for sleep apnea is a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. Many people find the CPAP machine bulky, difficult to adapt and disruptive to their bedroom partner.

Dentists, such as our own, Dr. Michele Nielsen, are trained to provide custom nighttime dental devices that push the tongue or lower jaw forward as an alternative to the CPAP.

Do you hate your CPAP machine? Comment below if you would like us to contact you for a consultation to see if an oral sleep appliance is an option for you.
