Let’s talk Fluoride!

What is fluoride and why do we use it on our teeth?

Fluoride is a mineral which can be naturally found in water, soil, plants, rock, and even the air! For us humans, we can also find this mineral in our bones and teeth. It is most commonly used to improve dental health and help protect against cavities.

Benefits of fluoride include:

• remineralizing/rebuilding weakened tooth enamel

• slowing down the loss of minerals from tooth enamel

• reversing early signs of tooth decay

• preventing the growth of harmful oral bacteria

Majority of the time, you can get proper fluoride intake through toothpastes, mouth rinses, supplements, and application at your dental office!

CAVITIES: What exactly are they?

Cavities (aka took decay or caries) are among the world’s most common health problems amid all ages.

They occur when decay causing bacteria make acids which destroy your tooth surface and enamel. The decay can grow and start causing pain, infection, and even tooth loss if not treated!

Early decay can look like a white spot on the surface of your tooth, whereas more advanced decay can look like a darker spot or hole in the tooth. Some carious legions’ extent can only be seen with an X-ray.

Take care of your teeth!
