Don’t Neglect Dental Health on Vacation
Many people start making to-do lists for the Summer or book their flights for their tropical vacation. Summer dental health may be one of the last things on anyone’s mind. However, your mouth is always helping you eat wherever you are, so it gets no vacation. A holiday may last a few days, but your teeth will be with you for much longer than that, so they deserve your undivided attention!
Although it may be tough to follow Summer dental tips at all times during a vacation, here are some things you can do to maintain your oral health on the go.
• Visit your dentist before you leave if you are going away for a long time.
• Pack hygiene products such as your toothbrush and floss to have no room for excuses.
• Take sugar-free treats with you to prevent overeating sugar-loaded products.

Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Smile in Campus Dentist:
REGINA – SASKATCHEWAN

SPRING IS AROUND THE CORNER: 5 WAYS TO GET READY
Winter is passing and signs of spring are all around us! Does this inspire you to start spring cleaning your home and yard? Before you grab your bucket, squeegee, and mop, take a moment to think about your dental health routine. As your CAMPUS DENTIST, we’ve come up with a spring cleaning checklist for your oral health routine so your smile is healthy, vibrant, and ready for the new season!
Tip #1 – Replace Your Toothbrush
Have you been using the toothbrush you received in your stocking at Christmas? That’s great! It’s been about three months since Christmas so it’s time to say goodbye to these weathered bristles. If you are using an electric toothbrush, 3-4 months is the recommended replacement time for their heads as well. Have you been sick? Cold or flu? If you forgot to replace your toothbrush right after being ill, now is the time to throw it away and start fresh.
Tip #2 Check the Expiration on Your Mouthwash
We recommend a mouth rinse with your daily oral hygiene routine. Sometimes an old mouth rinse or wash is lurking underneath our cabinets that still gets used. Check your mouthwash and if past the expiration date, toss them. Quick and easy.
Tip #3 – Clean Your Retainer / Clear Aligners / Night Guard Cases
Brushing our retainers, night guards for teeth grinding (bruxism), clear aligners, etc. should be part of our daily routine. The cases these sit in, however, often get neglected and can collect bacteria and grime. Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to soak your cases and give them a good scrub to clear debris and bacteria. If you’ve been sick it’s always a good idea to try and remember to scrub your retainers, guards, and cases right away to avoid getting sick again.
*If you suffer from teeth grinding and think you may need a night guard, contact us for a consultation.
Tip #4 – Spring to that floss & try something new
Do you find it tough to remember to floss every day? You may just need to try a different type of dental floss! Consider these popular variations on traditional floss:
• Waxed floss: Waxed floss is a commonly used option and comes in a variety of flavors (cinnamon, mint, bubble gum – even surprising flavors, like bacon!).
• Dental tape: Dental tape is a thin “ribbon” of floss that slides between teeth easily.
• Floss picks: Floss picks are a good option if it’s difficult or painful to open your mouth wide enough to use traditional flossing methods or if you’re on-the-go.
Tip #5 – Schedule a Professional Dental Cleaning
When is the last time you had a general dental cleaning? We recommend bi-annual cleanings for a host of reasons. Regular dental exams help rid your mouth of plaque that brushing and flossing can’t take care of, help keep cavities at bay and can prevent costly repairs that could go unnoticed without check-ups. Schedule your Medford dental cleaning here.
While we don’t want to add to your heaping cleaning list, a spring cleaning for your mouth should be a gift to yourself. A healthy mouth is often associated with a confident smile. Feel good about your dental health and visit Main Street Family Dentistry for any of your dental needs this Spring!

First of all we wish all our Patients a funny, safe, sunny Summertime!

Dental problems may occur all year round, but they become more visible in the Summer when you are enjoying your popsicle on sipping on slushies to beat the heat. You may also have underlying dental issues that become noticeable in the Summer.

Flaunt Your Summer Smile

After following these Summer dental tips and taking all the measures possible to retain your oral health, enjoy the Summer with your rejuvenated smile. Studies have found that your smile directly impacts your self-confidence, so focusing on your dental health can affect you in many ways. Say cheese and start showing off your Summer-ready teeth!
Say Hi to Your Dentist

Regular dentists’ visits are essential at any time of the year. However, it is crucial to schedule a dentist appointment at the beginning of Summer to make sure your mouth is ready to indulge in ice cream on a hot day. Make an appointment to obtain Campus Dentist at your earliest convenience to kickstart your mouth’s wellness treatment.
Frequent, at least once a year, dental checkups will reveal any underlying issues your teeth may have. You could have cavities or more significant problems that require urgent care. It is best to visit your dentist regularly and not neglect any pain or discomfort you are facing. The best what you can hear from us: no problems! No need to book another visit! Good for you – not good for the business (JOKE!!!!!)

Say no to sugary drinks and snacks
As the temperature rises, it’s common to sip and snack during sports tournaments, festivals or nearly any community event. “Watch your intake of lemonade, juice and soda,” “Consider sugary drinks treats to enjoy once in a while, and not often.” - says wise Dentist. Instead, offer water to beat the heat or with meals. And, don’t let summertime grazing damage your smile. Taking a break from snacking is healthy for your teeth. It allows time for saliva to bathe the teeth, wash away leftover food and get stronger.

Go the Extra Mile to Clean

You already know the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day. But did you know that approximately 37.5% of Canadians (as of 2018) brush their teeth at least twice a day? That’s more than half of the population not following basic health protocols. Brushing your teeth twice a day is essential as it helps remove the microbe that builds up in your mouth and causes bad breath. It also enables you to get rid of any food stuck between your teeth. Proper Summer dental health requires extra attention to your mouth due to the types of food you may consume.
Follow the procedure below to maintain good oral hygiene.
• Gently brush your teeth on all sides with toothpaste. Use circular motions and back-and-forth strokes. Don’t use too much force or stiff bristles.
• Clean your tongue with a tongue scraper or the back of your toothbrush if it has a tongue cleaner on it.
• Floss regularly to clean between your teeth as floss can reach the areas your toothbrush cannot.
• Include mouthwash in your daily routine for added oral benefits such as reducing bad breath and removing bacteria.
Taking care of your oral health goes beyond your daily routine. Follow professional cleaning tips for your teeth to ensure that your teeth receive the love they deserve.

Stay Safe While Playing Sports

Summer activities may consist of sports, such as football, potentially leading to Summer dental injuries. It is essential to be prepared beforehand to prevent any sports injuries. Oral damages or fractures can severely affect your ability to eat or speak and can be extremely painful.
To stay safe during outdoor activities, you can wear a mouthguard while playing certain sports. Since wearing a mouthguard isn’t feasible during all activities, try to protect your mouth during any potential injuries. If something does happen, visit the dentist right away for immediate treatment.

Invisalign or Braces? What is better?
Ninety-six percent of people report that a smile is important to an individual’s overall appearance. So in order to get beautifully aligned, healthy teeth many people choose to get Invisalign or braces.
But between Invisalign and braces, which one is right for you? Good question! This decision comes down to a few important personal preferences and priorities.
Read below for everything you need to know about the Invisalign vs braces debate.
Price
If the cost of treatment is a concern, traditional braces are usually the more affordable option. Braces generally cost between $2,500 and $8,000.
Invisalign costs will vary depending on how many trays are required. The number of trays is dependent on the severity of the changes needed to your teeth. Invisalign may cost anywhere between about $3,500 and $8,000.
You can talk to your dentist about the price before making a decision. If you have dental insurance, they may offer some or full coverage of the cost of Invisalign or braces. You can contact your insurance or check your coverage to estimate the total cost of either Invisalign or braces..
Appearance
The biggest difference between Invisalign or braces is appearance, and Invisalign is going to win this category every time. Invisalign is virtually undetectable while typical metal braces are more noticeable.
Invisalign trays are made from a clear plastic material whereas braces are metal. Some kids enjoy picking out different colored bands for metal braces, but for the most part children and adults alike prefer the appearance of Invisalign.
If you are someone that wants your teeth alignment to be discreet, Invisalign is the superior choice.
Comfort
Straightening your teeth is not always the most comfortable experience. Whether you have braces or Invisalign the process of shifting the alignment of your teeth may be painful.
However, Invisalign tends to be more comfortable than traditional braces because it applies less pressure to the teeth overall. Braces can also have sharp edges that can cut the inner lip and the tongue.
If you play sports, metal braces can be a safety risk if there is incidental contact.
Over time people get used to either braces or Invisalign and find that they can be relatively comfortable.
Effectiveness
Braces have been used to straighten teeth and beautify smiles for years. Braces cannot be removed by the patient and therefore they have to wear them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as is recommended by the orthodontist.
The challenge with Invisalign is that the trays are removable, so patients may not always comply with the suggested time of use. Moreover, if you forget or misplace the trays, your teeth are going to shift while you are not wearing them.
People with Invisalign generally wear the trays less than the recommended amount which can lengthen the total time it takes to complete treatment.
Traditional braces are also more effective in cases where the teeth are severely misaligned. Invisalign cannot always straighten teeth that are rotated or overlapping.
If you are concerned about whether you could be a candidate for Invisalign, you can book a free consultation and see.
Convenience
Both braces and Invisalign have pros and cons in terms of convenience. Braces are convenient because you don’t have to take them out, but they can prevent you from eating certain foods which is annoying.
Invisalign is convenient when you want to eat your favorite hard or sticky foods, but remembering to take out the trays and store them securely is often overlooked.
If you are prone to misplacing things, Invisalign may not be the best option. It can also be challenging in social situations to excuse oneself to remove the Invisalign trays before eating and to put them back in after eating.
Care and Cleaning
Cleaning your teeth should be a priority regardless of whether you have braces or Invisalign. Typically the cleaning process is easier with braces because you can brush and floss normally. However, if there is food stuck in the metal you may need to use a smaller brush to clean.
With Invisalign brushing and flossing is the same, but there is some additional effort required to keep the trays clean. Each time you eat you should clean the trays. You can use warm water to rinse and brush or a special Invisalign cleaning solution.
Cleaning the crevices of the Invisalign trays can be a hassle especially if you are away from home. And without proper cleaning there can be a build-up of bacteria or solid food.
Being diligent about oral health is even more important when you have braces or Invisalign, so don’t forget to brush and floss!
Follow-Up and Post-Treatment
Regular orthodontic appointments are recommended whether you have braces or Invisalign. For braces, this usually means about every month and for Invisalign every 4-6 weeks.
Once you have completed your treatment with braces you will be required to wear a retainer of some kind (usually just at night) to ensure the teeth maintain their position. Without that, you risk your teeth moving back to the way they were before.
Invisalign also requires that you wear a tray at night once your treatment is complete.
Invisalign vs Braces: The Verdict
The fact of the matter is that in the debate between Invisalign vs braces it all comes down to personal choice. So, to make the decision that is best for you or your child, you should weigh the categories above.
It is also critical that you consult an orthodontist to determine whether you can get Invisalign. Certain scenarios may preclude you from this kind of treatment.
Don’t wait to change your smile and start feeling more confident today. Whatever you choose, practice good oral hygiene and stay in communication with your orthodontist if you have questions.
For more helpful orthodontic tips, check out some of our other blogs or come visit us in person at one of our convenient locations.

Preventive Dentistry Can Help Your Oral and Financial Health

Preventive dentistry can often offer you huge benefits, both financially, for your dental and general health. People tend to contact a dentist when they have an issue or want something looked at. However, preventive dentistry can often help prevent those problems and emergencies before they begin. Read on to learn more about how it benefits you.

What Is Preventive Dentistry?

Preventive dentistry represents an umbrella term for all the things you can do concerning your oral health to prevent problems from developing. You can also use preventive dentistry to arrest certain issues and keep them from becoming worse.

When you see your dentist for a routine checkup, that’s part of preventive dental care. Generally, everything you do to take care of your oral health falls within the realm of preventive dentistry. These things can include:

Examinations
Cleanings/Scalings
X-rays
Fluoride treatments
Dental sealants
Oral cancer screenings

These routine checkups can help spot signs of issues such as cavities, gingivitis, loss of enamel, and other oral health problems. If the dentist spots a potential issue, he/she can educate you on how to reverse the issue or prevent it from developing further.

Preventive dental care can also help find some serious non-dental problems. The state of your oral health can point to various issues such as diabetes, osteoporosis, certain types of cancers, and other potential problems. Spotting these issues early can make all the difference in your overall health.

How Does It Help You Save Money?
Your oral health is of the utmost importance, but preventive dentistry can also help with your financial health. Routine checkups cost far, far less than actual procedures or operations. Consider that every potential problem that’s arrested or reversed is something that could cost you a great deal of money to fix if you waited until the problem grew not to mention just Root canal Procedures.

Issues with your teeth can lead to a great deal of pain, the inability to perform work duties, and various other problems that can also affect your financial health. In addition, many healthcare plans that include dental will often include preventive dental care more than any other type of dental work.

You should take advantage of these dental provisions of your insurance. Many people find out too late that their healthcare’s dental plan doesn’t cover a lot of things. Don’t wait to have to pay out of pocket for dental care. Instead, use your dental plan for preventive care sooner rather than later.

Brushing and flossing are a major part of preventive dentistry. Watching what you eat and drink also plays a large role in maintaining your dental health. You can start right now by scheduling an appointment for a checkup for yourself.

If you’re not sure how to begin with preventive dentistry, then contact a dentist office and ask. Prevention is also about education, and your dentist’s office will gladly give you the information you need to maintain your dental health while preventing expensive dental problems from showing up.

Revolution in Dentistry
How New Technology Is Helping Dental Patients
The digital revolution is exploding around us, and groundbreaking modern technology is improving all aspects of our lives. Because of this, both patients and dentists are enjoying the perks of highly technological methods and equipment. In the field of dentistry, we are blending the best of yesterday’s tried and true techniques with the most exciting new methods of today. Here are just a few facts how digital technology is revolutionizing dentistry.
Interactive methods.
Digital dentistry has made dental care more interesting. Viewing a patient’s mouth is not exclusive to the dentist anymore. With the help of computer screens both patient and dentist can see Xrays images. Digital x-rays use less radiation than traditional films. They also require less storage space, and they can easily be magnified and manipulated to zero in on problematic areas of the mouth. Intra-oral cameras take digital photos that can be used in tandem with digital x-rays for better diagnostics. Real-time allows the dentist an opportunity to discuss dental problems with the patient with a visual aid. This makes brushing instructions clearer. In turn, the patient understands the current oral health, prompting action to improve it.
Shorter time, lower costs
Waiting for days or weeks for the dental lab to finish making a restoration is now a thing of the past. Because of digital technology, dentists can have a veneer, dental crown, or set of dentures in just a day or two. This cuts down the number of appointments, saving the patient and dentists more time. Fewer appointments reduce the costs for transportation and fees for services per visit. Patients, insurance providers, and dental labs can get the digital images from digital X-rays right away.
Dental restorations, such as crowns, can reach the patient on the same day. This is possible through 3D imaging and dental crown printing. Digital dentistry uses CAD-CAM or computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing technology. In this technology, a 3D scanner takes an image of the broken tooth. Then, a milling device takes that image and prints it. All the dentist needs to do is prepare the tooth and attach the restoration.
Better patient experience
Some patients are put off by traditional dental impressions. The latest alternative is a 3D scanner. These 3D scanners can take the complete image of the patient’s tooth without biting into any molding plaster. This saves the patient time.
When it comes to dental procedures, most patients become agitated because of the pain. Fear of dental pain is a major reason for skipping dental appointments. Digital dentistry has an answer in the form of laser dentistry. In this procedure, the computer-guided dental laser can work on soft or hard tissues. This results in a needle-free, anesthesia-free, noise-free, and blood-free procedure. Patients also skip the lingering side effects of anesthesia, such as slurred speech.
Faster diagnoses
Because of digital dentistry, dentists can now examine teeth and gums with digital X-rays. These X-rays produce images in seconds. Patients are calmer because they do not feel they are in danger with these digital X-rays. Traditional X-rays involve some level of radiation and several harsh chemicals to produce the images. With digital X-rays, radiation exposure reduces by 80-90%.
Digital dentistry makes it better for patients like you to go through dental appointments
You may be one of those patients who go through some level of anxiety before your dental appointment. The good news is that digital dentistry makes treatments quick, blood-free, anesthesia-free, and needle-free. If you need veneers or crowns, you can now have them in a day as well. If your dental clinic embraces digital dentistry, you can have an easier dental checkup.
Digital Record Keeping and Consultations
Now more than ever before, dentists and patients are able to work together as a truly collaborative team. Digital records require just a tiny fraction of the storage space that paper charts and films needed, allowing dentists to better utilize those areas. Online scheduling lets patients make, change, and cancel appointments as needed. Specialized software allows dentists to consult remotely, in real time, on complex cases.
Websites and social media sites encourage dialogue between and among dentists, staff members, and patients. Any patient with an internet connection can easily research his particular condition and the available options for treatment, while online reviews let patients share their experiences with others.
