The best long weekends include food you don’t have to negotiate with.

No quietly moving the corn to the “good side.”
No tearing the crust off the bread.
No cutting everything into smaller pieces because one tooth has been acting suspicious since… well, longer than anyone wants to admit.

Sometimes we adjust so gradually that it starts to feel normal.

A cracked tooth, a missing tooth, sensitivity or a change in the bite can all affect how comfortably someone eats. And chewing on one side may work around the problem for a while—but it doesn’t explain why that side became the designated side.

Today, though… enjoy the plate. Enjoy the people. Enjoy the extra-long conversation around the table.

What was the first thing on your Labour Day plate—corn, grilled vegetables, bread or something else entirely? 👇

Apparently, long-weekend packing includes giving your teeth seven completely unrelated jobs. 😅

Bottle opener.
Package ripper.
Ice crusher.
Key holder.
Fishing-line cutter.
Hairpin storage.
Pen-cap stress manager.

And yes… most of us have done at least one.

The problem is that teeth can chip, crack, or damage existing dental work when they’re asked to handle hard objects and sudden pressure. Usually during that tiny “it’ll be fine” moment.

So before Labour Day weekend:
Pack the scissors.
Bring the bottle opener.
Keep the line clippers nearby.
Find an actual pocket for the keys.

Your teeth already have a job—helping you enjoy everything you packed to eat.
Now, honesty only: which one have you done? 👀

Is it possible my teeth are aging faster than I am?
Sometimes... but it usually isn’t about age alone.

Your teeth and gums can begin showing the effects of everyday habits, health changes, and accumulated wear through:
• thinning or worn enamel
• small cracks or shortened teeth
• gum recession and exposed roots
• increased sensitivity
• dry mouth
• grinding or clenching
• old fillings or crowns beginning to fail
• frequent exposure to acidic foods and drinks

These changes can make your smile look or feel older, but they aren’t always inevitable. Many can be slowed, protected, or treated once we understand what’s causing them.

At K&K Dental Studio in Ottawa, we look at more than cavities. We assess enamel wear, gum and bone support, bite forces, saliva, existing dental work, and the daily habits affecting your smile.

Your teeth don’t need to be perfect. They just need the right support to keep serving you well for years to come.

September has a way of filling every empty space…
School traffic. Work deadlines. Unanswered emails. Lunch in the car because apparently sitting down is now a luxury.

And somewhere between all of that, your jaw may be joining the chaos.
Clenching doesn’t only happen while you sleep. Some people press their teeth together during the day while concentrating, driving, exercising or scrolling—often without realizing it.

Quick jaw check:
Lips together.
Teeth apart.
Shoulders down.

Your teeth generally do not need to remain pressed together when you’re resting. If you regularly notice jaw fatigue, facial tension, headaches, tooth sensitivity or changes in your bite, mention it at your next dental visit. These symptoms can have several possible causes, and an individual assessment matters.

Where do you catch yourself clenching most—traffic, work or sleep? Tell us below. 👇

Why does one tooth suddenly feel different when I chew?
Maybe it feels slightly higher than the others. Tender. Less stable. Or simply “off” in a way that’s difficult to explain.

That change can happen for several reasons, including:
• uneven bite pressure
• clenching or grinding
• inflammation around the tooth
• a crack, infection, or damaged filling
• loss of bone and gum support from periodontal disease

If the tooth is mobile, a periodontal splint may sometimes help. Splinting connects the loose tooth to neighbouring stable teeth, helping distribute chewing pressure and improve comfort while the area heals or receives periodontal care.

But here’s the important part: a splint provides stability. It doesn’t treat active gum disease or remove the underlying cause by itself.

That’s why treatment begins with an examination, periodontal measurements, bite assessment, and dental imaging when appropriate.

If one tooth feels different when you bite or chew, don’t wait for it to become painful. That subtle change may be your first clue that something needs attention.

When a dental infection doesn’t stay quiet, your body may feel the strain.
An infected or inflamed tooth can sometimes cause very little pain. Still, signs such as swelling, tenderness, a recurring gum pimple, discomfort when biting, or symptoms around a previously treated tooth deserve attention.

A properly completed root canal is designed to remove infection, reduce inflammation, and preserve the natural tooth. Root canal treatment itself is not a source of “toxins” or systemic illness. But an untreated infection—or a tooth that has not healed as expected—should be evaluated rather than ignored. American Association of Endodontists

The lymphatic system helps manage fluid, immune activity, and cellular waste throughout the body. It’s an important part of whole-body health, but dental treatment should never be presented as a “lymph detox.” The first step is identifying whether infection or inflammation is actually present.

At K&K Dental Studio, we look beyond the symptom to understand what may be happening beneath the surface. That may include a clinical examination, appropriate dental imaging, and a personalized treatment plan.

Your mouth is part of your body. Caring for one supports the other.

Getting older doesn’t mean losing your teeth is inevitable.
A few small habits can make a meaningful difference in keeping your teeth, gums, and dental work healthy for years to come:

• Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
• Clean between your teeth every day
• Tell your dentist about dry mouth, especially after medication changes
• Clean dentures, bridges, and implants as instructed
• Have loose or uncomfortable dentures checked
• Keep regular dental exams, even when nothing hurts

Dry mouth deserves special attention. It isn’t simply a normal part of aging, and reduced saliva can increase the risk of cavities, mouth infections, and denture irritation. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research

Those small dark gaps between your teeth have a name: black triangles.
They can appear when the gums recede, after orthodontic or periodontal treatment, or simply as the shape of the teeth and gums changes over time. Beyond changing the appearance of your smile, these spaces may also trap food and make the area harder to keep clean.

The good news? Closing black triangles doesn’t always require veneers or crowns.
For this patient, Dr. Plieva used the Bioclear method. Specially designed matrices and warmed, tooth-colored composite were used to reshape the teeth and close the spaces while preserving the healthy natural tooth structure.
No unnecessary removal of enamel. Just a conservative approach designed to create a smoother, more balanced smile.
If you’re wondering, “How can I fix black triangles between my teeth?” a Bioclear consultation can help determine whether this minimally invasive treatment is right for you.

Does Waterlase reduce the risk of infection?
It may help.
Waterlase uses laser energy combined with a fine water spray to treat hard and soft tissues with precision. Research suggests Er,Cr:YSGG laser energy can reduce bacterial contamination in certain dental procedures. It may also cause less bleeding and preserve more healthy tissue, depending on the treatment.

But Waterlase cannot guarantee that an infection won’t develop.
Your diagnosis, the type of procedure, proper sterilization, home care, and following your dentist’s aftercare instructions all matter too. Think of Waterlase as one useful part of a carefully planned treatment—not a replacement for good clinical care.

At K&K Dental Studio in Ottawa, Dr. Plieva determines whether Waterlase is appropriate based on your oral health, diagnosis, and individual treatment needs.

Have questions about laser dentistry or whether Waterlase could be used for your treatment? Ask us at your next visit.

Why have I been ignoring my bleeding gums for so long?
Probably because they became normal before they ever felt urgent.

Bleeding gums often don’t hurt. You may notice a little pink in the sink, switch to brushing more gently, and move on with your day. After a while, it becomes something you expect.

But healthy gums shouldn’t bleed regularly.
Frequent bleeding can be an early sign of gingivitis or gum disease, especially when it comes with:
• redness or swelling
• persistent bad breath
• gum tenderness
• receding gums
• loose teeth or changes in your bite
The good news? Catching gum inflammation early can make treatment simpler and help protect the bone supporting your teeth.
If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, don’t feel embarrassed... and don’t stop cleaning the area. Let us help you understand why it’s happening and what your gums need.
