Some great-tasting snacks that won't harm your teeth:

- Plain milk and buttermilk
- Fruit and raw vegetables
- Plain yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese
- Hard boiled or devilled eggs
- Nuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds
- Melba toast
- Salads

Also, Sugar is one of the main causes of dental problems. The average Canadian eats the equivalent of 40 kg of sugar each year. Here are a few ways to cut down:

- Try to choose sugar-free snacks - see the snacks listed below.

- Add less sugar to coffee or tea (or use sugar substitutes).

- Avoid sugar-sweetened soft drinks.

- Look for fruit juices and drinks with no added sugar.

Read lists of ingredients when you're grocery shopping. Honey, molasses, liquid invert sugar, glucose, and fructose are all types of sugar.

When you do eat sweets, avoid sticky sweets. They cling to teeth and are harder to brush away. Eat sweets with a meal, not as a snack. The increased flow of saliva during a meal helps to wash away and dilute sugar.

Carry a travel-size toothbrush and use it after eating sweets. If you can't brush, at least rinse your mouth with water or eat a fibrous fruit or raw vegetables. Or chew a piece of sugarless gum.

What You Can Do About Gum Disease

FACT: Statistics show that as many as 75 percent of adults over the age of 30 may suffer from some degree of gum disease. It’s the most common disease of humans.

Gum disease may be a risk factor for a number of serious health conditions such as heart disease and stroke, pneumonia and other respiratory diseases, diabetes and premature or low birth weight babies.
If you have gum disease, the bacteria from swollen or bleeding gums can travel through the bloodstream, potentially worsening or causing other types of health problems.

How gum disease develops
Gum disease starts with the formation of hard and soft deposits on the surface of the teeth. Over time, a buildup of bacteria called plaque collects at the gum line, eventually hardening on the teeth into deposits called calculus or tartar.

Without proper oral care, these bacteria can cause inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), pe*****te the gum line and finally spread into the underlying bone (periodontitis).

If left untreated, the infection can eventually lead to shrinking and/or swelling, bleeding gums, loose teeth, abscesses and, ultimately, loss of teeth.

What you can do
If you have gum disease and/or are at risk for heart disease, stroke or respiratory diseases, it is particularly important to pay attention to your oral health. With regular, proper home and professional oral care, gum disease can be controlled and sometimes even stopped or reversed.

- Have prepared for your appointment to ensure your safety
- Review your chart and medical history
- Review your current medical status with you – there are many
medical conditions and medications that may influence dental hygiene treatment
- Examine your head and neck for abnormalities
- Examine your tongue, gums, teeth and all other areas of your mouth
- Measure the attachment of the gums to your teeth (probing)
- Record all findings on your chart
- Take prescribed radiographs (x-rays)
- Scale your teeth using hand or mechanical instruments removing hard and soft deposits (plaque and tarter)
- Polish your teeth, if needed, to remove stains
