Dental coverage questions are easier when you know what to ask.

Urban Dental Centre accepts patients through the Canadian Dental Care Plan, commonly known as the CDCP.

Before your appointment, please have your CDCP member information, coverage start date and applicable co-payment details ready. Our administrative team can help explain the clinic’s claim procedures and whether an estimate or preauthorization may be required.

Please remember that CDCP coverage does not necessarily mean that every service will be fully paid. Co-payments, frequency limits, CDCP-established fees and additional patient costs may apply depending on your coverage and proposed treatment.

Your dental provider submits eligible CDCP claims directly to Sun Life. Patients cannot submit claims themselves or receive reimbursement directly from Sun Life.

Quick quiz: Who may benefit from a sports mouthguard?

A. Only professional athletes
B. People participating in activities with a risk of impact to the face or mouth
C. Only athletes who have already injured a tooth

The best answer is B.

The type of protection recommended can depend on the sport, age, dental development and individual needs. A dentist can help families understand the available options, particularly for children with braces or changing teeth.

A school lunch can support both energy and oral health.

When planning lunches, include water as the regular drink and try to limit how frequently teeth are exposed to sugary or acidic snacks throughout the day.

Smile-friendly lunch ideas may include cheese, plain yogurt, vegetables, whole fruit and other foods appropriate for your child’s needs and school policies.

Nutrition needs vary, and no single food prevents dental problems. Consistent brushing, cleaning between the teeth when appropriate and regular dental care remain important.

Save this post for your next grocery trip and share your family’s favourite lunchbox idea below.

Sunday is a good time to make weekday routines a little easier.

As families prepare for school, camps, sports or work, consider resetting the oral-care items everyone uses.

Check toothbrushes for wear, make sure fluoride toothpaste and floss are available, clean and label appliance cases, and place water bottles where they can be filled in the morning.

For younger children, a visible routine chart or a shared brushing time may make the habit easier to remember. Children may still need adult guidance or supervision depending on their age and abilities.

The aim is not perfection. A simple, repeatable routine is more useful than an ambitious plan that becomes difficult to maintain.

Which part of your family’s routine needs a reset this week?

Myth: Baby teeth do not matter because they fall out.

Fact: Baby teeth play an important role while they are present. They help children chew, speak and maintain space as the mouth develops.

Cavities, discomfort or infection in a baby tooth should still be assessed by a dental professional. Early dental visits also give families an opportunity to ask questions and help children become familiar with the dental environment.

As back-to-school season approaches, consider whether your child’s dental care is up to date.

Save this post or share it with another parent or caregiver.

“Let your smile be part of how you welcome the day.”

A healthy smile is not about looking perfect. It is about feeling comfortable, caring for yourself and having the confidence to connect with the people around you.

As a new week approaches, choose one small habit that supports your oral health. It might be replacing an old toothbrush, remembering to floss tonight or finally asking a question you have been putting off.

Small, consistent actions often feel more manageable than trying to change everything at once.

Share this reminder with someone whose smile brightens your day.

Your water bottle supports more than hydration.

Drinking water throughout the day can help rinse away some food particles and keep your mouth from feeling dry. It is especially useful during hot Ottawa days, after physical activity and while travelling.

Water is not a replacement for brushing, flossing or professional dental care, but it is a simple smile-friendly beverage choice.

Try keeping a refillable bottle nearby today and take regular water breaks - particularly if you are spending time outdoors.

Tag the person who always reminds everyone else to drink more water. 💧
