Wow!

Who put the “Barr” in Barrhaven?

Mel Barr had originally planned to build a horse racing track when he purchased 200 acres of farmland -- but with the Rideau Carleton Raceway opening in 1962, Barr decided to develop his land for housing instead.

Fast forward six decades and Barrhaven is now a diverse and thriving bedroom community with a population of more than 100,000.

Barrhaven would be among a number of suburbs to be built beyond the National Capital Region’s Greenbelt after the broad swath of land surrounding Ottawa had been set aside for protection from development.

In the early days of Nepean Township, the area was divided into homesteads, and settlers, largely Irish immigrants, began establishing farms.

The Jockvale (one-room) schoolhouse opened in 1841 to serve the children and families of the growing rural area.

By 1906 Jockvale Public School had been rebuilt in brick. For many decades to follow community life revolved around the school, hosting Christmas concerts, fund-raising activities, and coming together to build an outdoor skating rink.

Barrhaven became part of the City of Nepean upon its incorporation in 1978 and part of the City of Ottawa after amalgamation in 2000.

(Prior the European settlement in the 1800s, what is now Barrhaven had been long inhabited by the Algonquin people, and it is thought that today’s Jockvale Road follows the route of what had been an ancient Indigenous trail.)
