Keep Smiling with Good Dental Health!

Let an electric toothbrush do the work for you! Says Dr. Leila Ebrahimpoor with the Ottawa Dental Society. “Prevention is so important as we age,” says Dr. Ebrahimpoor, “and a good electric toothbrush provides a really good cleaning with little effort.” She also recommends a checkup every six months. “Your dentist will see silent problems that you can’t,” she says. “The nerves to our teeth are not as active as we age, and your dentist can spot a problem that you may not even feel.” And she says make sure you use fluoride toothpaste to keep your teeth resistant to cavities. “With older adults, dry mouth can lead to more cavities, so good brushing with a good toothpaste can keep them in check.” Keeping your mouth and teeth healthy has a social aspect as well. If you’re missing a tooth or have a broken tooth, you might feel self-conscious and less inclined to socialize. “Seniors and older adults are kind of like young children,” says Dr. Ebrahimpoor. “Their mouths are changing constantly, and problems can progress quickly.” She says staying well hydrated helps keep your mouth healthy. “Just remember that having a healthy mouth helps keep you healthy and smiling.
