If nothing hurts, do I still need a dental checkup?
It’s a fair question - especially when everything feels completely normal.
The important thing to know is that some dental concerns can be quiet at first. Early tooth decay, changes around the gums, or issues with existing dental work may not always cause pain right away.
That’s one reason regular dental exams matter even when you don’t have a specific concern.
A checkup gives your dentist an opportunity to look at your teeth and gums, review existing dental work, and decide whether anything needs to be watched more closely. When appropriate for your individual needs, dental X-rays may also help assess areas that aren’t easily visible during a clinical exam.
The goal isn’t to look for problems that aren’t there.
It’s to understand what’s happening in your mouth while things still feel good — and, when possible, identify changes before they become more complicated.
So yes, feeling fine is a good thing.
Just don’t make pain your reminder to see the dentist.
When was the last time you had a dental checkup while everything felt perfectly fine?
