Dr. Stephen Phelan has a full time dental practice in Oakville, Ontario where he uses the techniques that are taught in his seminars on a daily basis to treat his patients. He is very passionate about dental education and has started aYouTube channel to get the message out about how fun modern dentistry can be. He has lectured locally and internationally on the subject of occlusion, esthetic, implant and restorative dentistry. He graduated from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in 1992, and is one of only 300 dentists worldwide to have received Accredited Member status in the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Phelan is also one of a very small percentage of dentists to have passed this process on the first attempt. Dr. Phelan has spent hundreds of hours training with some of the best dental educators in the world including Drs. John Kois, Frank Spear, Peter Dawson, Dennis Tarnow, Daniel Buser, Jimmy Eubank, Jeff Morley, Bill Strupp, Buddy Mopper and Newton Fahl. Dr. Phelan is also a member of the Canadian Dental Association, Ontario Dental Association, and the ITI.

A patient brought this veneer in to me. Two millimeters thick.
It is not my case. I inherited it, and when I looked in the mouth the tooth had been prepped completelythrough the enamel. There was nothing left to bond to long term.
The literature is consistent on this. Across more than 60 clinical studies, veneer survival runs around 95% at 10 years and 91% at 15, and the failures concentrate in the cases bonded to a majority of dentin. Fifty percent enamel is the floor. My goal is to be above 75% enamel in my veneer preps.
The harder part is knowing where you are. There is no visible line between enamel and dentin. You see a change, not the junction, and none of it shows very well under water spray. You have to ustop, dry the prep and look.

Here is another 3D-printed mockup. We are doing this to assess changes to the gingival levels and incisal edge position prior to treatment. This patient will be having Invisalign orthodontics first to create better tooth position for the final restorative treatment. We also completed the mockup as an initial improvement to the smile for a pictures for an important event happening this month, unfortunately treatment could not possibly be completed before this event so this is a good temporary solution. This mockup was designed exocad in collaboration with Jenna from Bayview Dental Lab and printed on my Sprint Ray Pro 3D printer.

Here is a recently completed complex, full mouth, rehabilitation, combining implant crowns and a four unit implant supported bridge, veneers, crowns, and onlay veneers or vonlays as some people are now calling these. Implants were placed by Dr. Naheed Mohamed and ceramics by Harald Heindl. This one took a while, but I’m happy with the results. This was also one of the first cases that I had 3-D printed the provisional restorations. We went through a couple rounds to get the aesthetics and occlusion dialed in. Jenna at the Bayview Dental Lab was very helpful collaborating with finalizing the last set of 3-D printed provisionals.
