Why Do Cavities Form?
Cavities don’t appear overnight. They develop slowly, layer by layer. Understanding how they form can help you prevent them before they become a bigger problem.

Bacteria buildup
Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugars and produce acids that can damage your teeth.

Enamel weakening
Over time, these acids weaken the tooth enamel.

Plaque buildup
When plaque isn’t removed regularly, it can harden into tartar and create an environment where decay can develop.

Hard to clean areas
Some areas of your mouth are more difficult to clean, especially the surfaces of molars and the spaces between teeth.

Everyday habits
Frequent snacking, sugary drinks, and unregulated lbrushing and flossing can increase your risk of cavities.

Once the enamel becomes weakened, a cavity can begin to form. Without treatment, it can continue to grow and eventually lead to pain or more extensive dental treatment.

Our dentists explain that cavities are one of the most preventable dental problems. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings can help us detect early changes before they turn into pain or require more complex treatment.

How often should you change your toothbrush?
A quick reminder from our registered dental hygienist, Danica Pritchard.
Most people keep their toothbrushes much longer than they should. To protect your gums and enamel, it’s important to replace your brush (or electric toothbrush head) every 3 months or sooner if the bristles start to bend or look worn. Soft, fresh bristles clean better and remove plaque more effectively.
You should also change it sooner if:
• the bristles are frayed or flattened
• you’ve recently been sick
• the brush no longer feels firm enough to clean properly.
A simple way to remember: if you can’t recall when you last changed it, it’s probably time for a new one.

Why do we remove wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth don’t always cause problems, but when they do, they can affect your comfort and oral health.
Here are the most common reasons for removal:

• Impacted growth. When a wisdom tooth grows at an angle and pushes against neighboring teeth.
• Risk of infection . Wisdom teeth are often difficult to clean, making them more prone to inflammation and infection.
• Crowding. They can shift other teeth and affect your bite alignment.
• Decay or cysts . Wisdom teeth are more vulnerable to cavities and sometimes can develop cysts around them.
• Pain or swelling. Pain is always sign that the wisdom tooth may not be growing properly.

If you have a pressure, pain, or swelling at the back of your mouth, our team can assess your wisdom teeth and recommend the safest solution.
