A garden BBQ, a housewarming and an early birthday, all in one evening.

On September 5, the Smile Well team got together for a garden BBQ dinner. The table filled up fast, and there was pork belly on every grill.

Good food, good company, and then a little surprise: an early birthday celebration for Dr. Sangmin Shin, with a cake and flowers.

Food getting stuck around your back teeth, and wondering how to clean there better? 🦷

In this visit, Dr. Sangmin Shin goes over close-up images of a patient’s teeth and explains why the very back of the mouth is hard to keep clean. The wisdom tooth sits very close to the gum, leaving a narrow space where food can get trapped.

For back teeth, he suggests a smaller brush with straight-end bristles, which can make cleaning there more efficient. He also recommends replacing your brush often—once the bristles are bent and splayed, it’s time for a new one.

This patient appeared to have no cavities, only some staining, but cavities between the teeth may only show up on an X-ray. A basic X-ray can help check that everything is OK between the teeth.

Every mouth is different. Ask your dentist which brush suits your back teeth.

Have an old crown or inlay, and wondering whether it’s still OK? 🦷

In this visit, Dr. Sangmin Shin goes over a patient’s crowns and inlays. As gums lose elasticity with age, gaps can open between teeth, and a toothbrush, floss or water flosser can help clean them.

An inlay is used when there is decay: the decayed part is removed and a gold piece is bonded in. Over time teeth can become more brittle, so biting a hard grain or bean can start a crack, and in severe cases the tooth can break.

If a crown or inlay has a hole or damage, replacing it may be recommended, because bacteria can get in through the gap. A tooth with a root canal may not hurt even as decay progresses, so a problem can go unnoticed.

Every mouth is different, and an exam and X-rays can help determine whether a crown or inlay needs replacing.

Front tooth broke the day before a trip, and wondering what can be done? 🦷

In this visit, Dr. Sangmin Shin sees a patient who came in holding a broken front tooth, with a trip planned for the next day. Only the root was left, so the tooth needed to be removed, and an implant was the remaining option.

A CT scan was used to measure the depth and width of the bone where the implant would go, and a temporary crown was built up from resin, little by little.

Because no surgical guide was used, X-rays were taken along the way to check the implant’s direction. Once the implant was placed, the temporary crown was adjusted in the mouth, and a check-up was planned for two weeks later, after the trip.

Every mouth is different, and whether an implant and a temporary tooth can be placed in one visit can only be decided after an exam and scans.

Grinding or clenching your teeth—and wondering whether a night guard is worth considering? 🦷

In this visit, Dr. Kwack goes over a patient’s photos and explains what heavy force can do. In some people, extra bone can build up on both sides as a reaction to strong biting or grinding. It doesn’t always happen, but it can.

A night guard sits between the upper and lower teeth. Because the teeth can’t close fully together, they can’t squeeze as hard, which can reduce the force on the teeth a little. A thicker guard is another option.

This patient also has three gold inlays on the right side. Teeth restored this way can crack or split under heavy force, so a guard may help protect them.

Grinding and clenching can’t be diagnosed from a video, and every mouth is different. An exam can help determine whether a night guard makes sense for you.
