🦷 Dental Myth: Sugar is the sole culprit of
cavities.
✅ The Truth: Cavities are caused by a combination of factors. While sugar can contribute, things like poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, acid reflux, smoking, mouth breathing, teeth grinding, cavity-causing bacteria, and a diet high in starch, sugar, and acidic drinks and foods can increase the risk of decay.
A diet lacking nutrients like calcium and fluoride can increase cavity risk as well. Calcium is a building block for strong, healthy teeth, and fluoride helps strengthen enamel. Without these nutrients, your teeth are more susceptible to the acid attacks.
Cavities happen when acids attack and weaken tooth enamel over time-and many factors can contribute to that process. A healthy smile isn’t just about avoiding sugar— it’s about protecting your teeth from all the factors that can weaken enamel and promote decay.
