Let’s Discuss Alzheimer’s Disease & Oral Health 🧠🦷

Could the health of your gums be connected to the health of your brain?

Some studies have identified Porphyromonas gingivalis—a bacterium strongly associated with periodontal disease—and its toxic enzymes, called gingipains, in brain tissue from people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Other research has found associations between gum-disease-causing bacteria, tooth loss and a greater risk of cognitive decline or dementia.

Scientists are continuing to investigate whether:

🧠Oral bacteria can travel beyond the mouth
🔥Chronic gum inflammation may contribute to inflammation elsewhere in the body
🧠Long-term periodontal disease may influence cognitive health
😊Preventing and treating gum disease could potentially support healthier aging

These findings are important, but they do not prove that gum disease causes Alzheimer’s disease—or that treating gum disease can prevent it.

What we do know is that caring for your gums remains an important part of caring for your overall health.

Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and maintain your recommended dental and hygiene visits.

💙 When teamwork is tested, great teams step up.

This past Friday, we had an unexpected leak at Pinewood Dental Care that caused disruption to some of our network equipment and certainly made for a more challenging day than we had planned!

But what it didn’t disrupt was the incredible spirit of our team. 🦷💪

Everyone pulled together, adapted, supported one another and kept our patients at the centre of everything we did. Despite the circumstances, we continued providing care and successfully completed our day.

Dr. Sharma would especially like to thank every member of the Pinewood Dental Care team, who worked this Friday. 🤍Your positive attitude, professionalism and willingness to step in wherever needed were truly appreciated.

Equipment can be disrupted. Plans can change.
But a strong team keeps going. ❤️

Dr. Sharma is incredibly grateful and proud of the way our team handled the day — together, calmly and with smiles intact.
