Helping someone else care for their teeth and gums isn’t always easy. They may not be able to brush or floss but it's important not to let those habits slide. Keeping the mouth clean lowers the risk of bacteria in the mouth moving into the lungs and causing infections. Ask us about special tools that can help when brushing and flossing another person’s teeth.

Be sure to pay attention to your loved one’s eating habits if they wear dentures, as they may be having discomfort and need their dentures adjusted or replaced.

No matter the age or mobility, a clean and healthy mouth is important for overall health.

If you’re experiencing a toothache, there are a few things you can try before calling our emergency line.

1. The most likely culprit of a toothache is a bit of food stuck between the teeth. Try flossing around the problem tooth. Remember to be gentle and not to force the floss between the teeth.
2. After flossing, rinse with warm saltwater. If this makes it worse, try rinsing with cold water. Depending on the problem, cold water might feel better than warm water.
3. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever, as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth.
4. Try rubbing an over-the-counter antiseptic containing benzocaine or clove oil onto the affected tooth and gum to numb the pain.
5. Place a cold compress on the outside of your cheek.
If the pain is not managed by an over-the-counter pain reliever, give us a call!

People who floss regularly benefit from healthier teeth and gums, fewer cavities, and fresher breath. It’s easy to make flossing a regular habit and it doesn’t always have to be done at bedtime, just once per day. Floss while watching TV or listening to music, or even in the shower!

Straws have gotten a bad rap lately and for good reason! While plastic straws are bad for the environment, drinking from a straw can help reduce cavities. Sipping sugary drinks through a straw positioned towards the back of your mouth can help reduce the amount of time the sugar is in contact with your teeth … but please use paper straws or carry your own reusable straw. :)

Tooth contouring is a gentle and pain-free procedure that alters the shape or length of a tooth. We remove a tiny amount of tooth enamel with a laser or a drill and sculpt a more pleasing shape. The tooth is then polished for a smooth finish. This simple procedure is pain-free and won’t cost an arm and a leg. Contact us at (905) 564-2021 about tooth contouring today and smile with confidence!

We all know that sugary snacks are bad for your teeth, but do you know how to identify high-sugar content using the product labels? Sugar goes by many names, including corn syrup, corn sweeteners, dextrose, fructose, glucose, sucrose, honey, maple syrup, and molasses. A quick rule of thumb is to avoid foods that list any form of sugar as the first ingredient. Choosing options with lower sugar content will help to keep you and your teeth healthy.

Sports and energy drinks are terrible for your teeth. The pH levels in these drinks breed bacteria and can cause irreversible erosion to tooth enamel. If you indulge in a post-game or post-workout energy drink, be sure to rinse with water afterward or chew a stick of sugar-free gum. Better yet – replace your sports drink with water!

Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste leaves a layer of protection that continues to protect your teeth once you’re done brushing. Rinsing with water directly after brushing can wash away that protective layer. So if you’re thirsty, make sure to have a glass of water before you brush to allow the toothpaste to do its job!
