Congratulations to our wonderful patient Shaolin who has completed her jaw bone development and orthodontic (braces) treatment. She had a crossbite and a class 3 tendency (underbite)

Crossbites can cause a:
1. Facial Asymmetry
2. Misalignment of the upper and lower jaw
3. Compression and pain of the temporomandibular joints
4. Tooth wear

Deep bites can cause a misalignment of the upper and lower jaw, compression and pain of the temporomandibular joints, tooth wear and an unaesthetic facial profile were the lower part of the face looks short.
We used an anterior bite ramp (Rickanator appliance) to obtain the ideal 3 dimensional position of the jaw so we obtain a correct:
1. overjet, overbite and class I molar relationship which provides the correct jaw and tooth alignment
2. vertical dimension which improves the facial esthetics

Electro Acupuncture is a very effective modality when treating TMJ and Craniofacial.

This patient presented with left jaw pain, trouble opening and closing her mouth, pain on chewing and pain over the sinus area.

Li4 (Hoku), SI 19 and ST 6 acupuncture pointer used and she reported 90% relief after the session was completed.

Li 4 is a distal site for central neuromodulation via cervical nerves and trigeminal spinal nucleus.

SI 19 allows for neuromodulation of the auriculotemooral nerve (innvervates the TMJ)

ST6 allows for neuromodulation of the mandibular nerve branch of the trigeminal nerve.

TMJ Splints are very useful for treating TMJ (jaw pain). Doctors and patient's commonly ask us "What is the best splint to use" and the honest answer is it depends. It depends on the patients clinical exam, patient's medical history & symptoms and the TMJ MRI results.

Getting straight teeth with braces doesn't mean you have to extract teeth. The patient has crowding of her teeth and a deep bite.

Also the patient had a MVA previously that has caused her to headaches, facial pain, neck pain and shoulder pain. She also reports having clicking and popping in the jaw joints, jaw locking, jaw pain on opening and closing, and pain on chewing.

We have started her treatment with a RN-Sagittal to eliminate the maxillary (upper jaw) entrapment by orthopedic development. Almost 80% pain reduction was reported by the patient after inserting the upper appliance.

This is due to the trigeminal nerve (specifically the Trigeminal Spinal Nucleus) relationship with the facial, cervical, vagus & glossopharyngeal nerve.
