Regular hygiene appointments are so important to your oral health. We start by reviewing your medical history and asking about any changes in your health. Then we dive into the oral examination, where we check the condition of your teeth and gums. (Sometimes this may include a low-dose X-ray and an oral cancer examination, too.) The cleaning stage involves removing built-up plaque and calculus (tartar), as well as polishing and perhaps fluoride. We wrap things up by discussing your treatment plan going forward. We look forward to seeing you at your next hygiene appointment!

Dental sealants offer a thin barrier of protection against cavities. Sealants can be applied to the chewing surface of molars and premolars as soon as the adult teeth come in, and can last for several years.

Do you know what to do if you accidentally lose a tooth? It's important to act quickly. Pick it up carefully and hold it by the top of the tooth — not the root — and store it in a container of milk, and if you don’t have milk, use saliva or water. Don’t rinse the tooth or let it dry out. Call us right away for further instructions. (905) 940-5229

It’s tricky to reach your back teeth when brushing. Even though it’s a bit more effort, it’s so important to brush your back teeth properly.

Make sure that you are using the correct size brush for your mouth. Try closing your mouth, and shifting your jaw to the side, to reach the cheek side of those back molars. That will give you a bit more room. You can also tilt the brush at a 45-degree angle to reach the very back surface of your last tooth.

You may find that an electric toothbrush helps you reach those difficult areas more easily.

It takes a bit of trial and error to find a method that works best for you.

Regular hygiene appointments are essential to your child’s oral health. We start by reviewing your child’s medical history and asking about any changes in their health. Then we dive into the exam, where we check the condition and development of their teeth, gums and jaw. We will take X-rays as needed.

Then we clean the teeth, removing tartar build-up, polishing and offering fluoride. Sometimes we’ll apply a sealant which is a thin coating that is placed on the teeth to protect them from cavities.

We’ll explain every step of the appointment to your child and how it relates to their dental health. We’ll educate them on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as how to choose tooth-friendly snacks. We’ll finish up by discussing your child’s treatment plan and answering any questions. We do this in a calm and peaceful environment to benefit you and your child.

We look forward to seeing you both at your child’s next hygiene appointment!

Helping someone else care for their teeth and gums isn’t always easy. They may not be able to brush or floss but it's important not to let those habits slide. Keeping the mouth clean lowers the risk of bacteria in the mouth moving into the lungs and causing infections. Ask us about special tools that can help when brushing and flossing another person’s teeth.

Be sure to pay attention to your loved one’s eating habits if they wear dentures, as they may be having discomfort and need their dentures adjusted or replaced.

No matter the age or mobility, a clean and healthy mouth is important for overall health.

Men are more likely than women to experience periodontal disease, and it may also impact other areas of men's health.

Studies have shown that prostate health, cardiovascular disease, impotence, and even cancer may be associated with a man’s periodontal health.

That’s why it’s especially important that men come in for hygiene visits twice a year and monitor potential symptoms of periodontal disease, including swollen or tender gums and bleeding while brushing.

When shopping for a new toothbrush, look for one with soft bristles. Some people assume that medium or hard bristles provide more cleaning power, but they can end up damaging your gums and enamel. Soft bristles are gentler on your teeth and gums and the bristles are flexible, making it easier to clean under the gumline.
