April is Oral Cancer Month.
Oral cancer can be life threatening if it is not treated early enough and correctly, that’s why it’s SUPER important to book an oral cancer screening at your next dental appointment so we can catch it early 🦷.

If you have a red or white patch of tissue in your mouth 👄 you should visit Dr.Sophie immediately if it does not heal within 14 days!

When you’re in the dental chair for a routine visit, you may be thinking, “I hope I don’t have any cavities” and, “I love how clean my teeth feel after I’m done.”

The last thing you’re probably thinking about is cancer.🩸

Sometimes a routine dental checkup can uncover lymphoma, a type of cancer, before other signs are even present. And while a cancer discovery is not welcomed, early detection is. 🗣

Lymphoma is a cancer of the body's immune system. There are two types: Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Lymphomas are the third most common cancer worldwide. 🌎

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is one of the most common cancers diagnosed. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is diagnosed in extranodal sites in 40% of cases, and the head and neck region is the second most affected, with an incidence of 11–33%, Among the intraoral findings 👄, the most frequent were ulcerations, pain, swelling, and tooth mobility.

Many times, lymphomas are discovered when people find painless swelling in areas near lymph nodes. These can include swelling in the armpits, groin, abdomen, and neck.

So, when Dr. Sophie sweeps her hands down your neck during an oral cancer screening, she is checking for swollen lymph nodes in your neck.

While you wouldn't normally dream of connecting lymphoma and teeth, it's essential to keep up with your regular health and dental appointments.

Dr. Sophie and her team are workers and always here for your you.
