๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ owned, female owned and operated As Canadian Certified Pedorthists, C. Ped (C)'s, we specialize in custom made foot orthotics to relieve foot, ankle, knee and hip pain, as well as correcting gait abnormalities. After taking a medical history, assessing the lower limbs both we

ight bearing and non-weight bearing, we are able to video a person's gait to determine if custom made foot orthotics would be beneficial. We use our unique SOLE Technique to set us apart from other orthotic clinics. We provide stabilization using orthopaedic fundamentals of gait with our carefully layered and engineered technique to build your foot orthotics. We also have the training and capability to do footwear modifications (ie lifts, flares), and custom footwear. We can measure and fit for both Performance-Grade (15-20 mmHg) and Medical-Grade (20-30 and 30-40 mmHg) compression socks to help with your sore, swollen and tired legs. All work is done at our on-site lab. A physician's prescription is required for all custom made foot orthotics.

Retrocalcaneal bursitis ๐Ÿ‘ฃ
Retrocalcaneal bursitis is a condition that causes heel pain. This pain spreads from the bursa located between the Achilles tendon and the heel bone. This bursa normally provides a cushion as you walk. A bursa is a fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction in areas that rub that are found all over your body.
๐Ÿ”นSymptoms: Can include severe pain and swelling in the heel, tenderness when the heel is touched, tight-fitting shoes may become hard to wear. You may also hear a crackling sound when you flex your foot.
๐Ÿ”นRisks: This type of bursitis is mainly caused by using the ankle a lot, such as running uphill. A sudden increase in running or similar activities can also lead to it. People who wear tight-fitting shoes while exercising are more prone to the condition as well as those who donโ€™t stretch or warm up properly before such activities. Some cases may result from an infection or a disease such as arthritis.
๐Ÿ”นTreatment: The aim of treatment is to ease symptoms so that the bursa has time to heal. At-home and OTC treatment can help manage symptoms such as rest, ice, elevation, compression, and anti-inflammatory medication. Custom-made orthotics can be used to offload pressure on the heel. Properly fitted footwear is also important to ensure the shoe is not too tight and isn't rubbing on the heel. Gentle stretching movements can restore flexibility in your ankle and foot and can also help with pain.

Well, if you had fun socks like we do, then you would think the same! But these aren't any old socks... they are actually compression socks!โฃโ €

โฃWell, many people! Christy wears hers often as sheโ€™s on her feet all day. Many nurses, physician, teachers, factory workers also wear them because they spend the majority of time on their feet. But you'll also find anyone who is getting swelling in their lower legs/ankles or has painful vericose veins will find relief wearing compression stockings. Now a days, athletes are often wearing these socks as well to help reduce swelling and cramping. Even people travelling on airplanes find comfort wearing a compression sock.โฃโ €

โฃCompression stockings help the blood pump back to the heart, rather than allowing pooling in the legs. They help control swelling and aching of the legs and ankles, and help slow the appearance of vericose and/or spider veins in the legs.โฃโ €

โฃThere are different grades of compression stockings. For "over-the-counter" socks, the compression grade is 15-20 mmHg, and these can be purchased without a medical prescription. We often recommend these for long flights or mild activity.โฃโ €
โฃโ €
Anything classed over 20 mmHg, has a higher compression on the leg and must be prescribed by a physician. These are more for people with (or preventing) vericose veins, lots of swelling of legs or ankles, people who spend lots of time on their feet.โฃโ €

โฃDefinitely not. We work with companies that take several measurements into consideration with their sizes. Not all legs are the same and in order for the compression socks to provide the best (and full leg) compression, they must fit properly.โฃโ €

Kids have a tendency to grow over the summer. Especially their feet!

If you have kids and theyโ€™ve grown more than a shoe size in the last 6 months, you should bring them in to the clinic. Our pedorthists can check their foot size on their orthotics and help you determine if they need new orthotics. Or if your kids play hard at their sports, maybe the orthotics have holes that you never noticed before.

In any case, get ready for back to school with shoes and orthotics that fit!! Call today or book online.

It's almost time for a new school year ๐ŸŽ

Many parents are thinking about what shoes their kids will wear, but this time of year we see many teachers to ensure their shoes are ready for "back to school" โœ๏ธ

As teachers head back to class (and back to standing all day), itโ€™s important to have comfortable shoes on your feet! Here are a few things to look for in shoes as you head back to school. ๐Ÿค—

โ€ข Thick, cushioned sole to absorb shock better and more comfortable for standing on the hard floors
โ€ข Round toe to reduce pinching of the toes as your foot swells all day
โ€ข Firm heel counter or back strap to hold heel in place and provide support
โ€ข Wedged or low, chunky heel if you must wear a heeled shoe
โ€ข Shoes that fit properly on both feet
โ€ข If you are putting your orthotics into your shoes, then look for an insole of at least 2-3mm thick that can be removed

If you have questions about what shoes are best for your feet contact the clinic. Otherwise, stay tuned this week for our top picks! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿฆถ CHARCOT FOOT: WHEN DIABETES AFFECTS THE BONES

If you have diabetes, youโ€™ve probably heard about the importance of looking after your feetโ€”but did you know that nerve damage can sometimes lead to a serious condition called Charcot foot?

Charcot foot can develop when diabetic neuropathy causes a loss of protective sensation in the feet. Because you may not feel pain normally, an injury or repeated stress can go unnoticed. Over time, the bones and joints can weaken, fracture and shift, causing significant changes to the shape of the foot.

Some things to watch for include:
๐Ÿ”ฅ A foot that feels unusually warm
๐Ÿฆถ Swelling of the foot or ankle
๐Ÿ”ด Redness or changes in skin colour
๐Ÿ‘ฃ A change in the shape or structure of your foot
โš ๏ธ A foot that looks or feels differentโ€”even if it doesnโ€™t hurt!

One of the tricky things about Charcot foot is that pain may be minimal or completely absent because of the loss of sensation.

If you have diabetes and notice sudden swelling, warmth, redness or a change in the shape of your foot, donโ€™t ignore it! Early assessment and treatment are important to help prevent further damage and deformity.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Proper footwear and offloading
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Regular diabetic foot assessments
๐Ÿฉบ Prompt medical attention when changes occur
๐Ÿฆถ Custom orthotic or bracing solutions when appropriate

Your feet may not always be able to tell you when something is wrongโ€”so look at them, check them and listen to the changes! โค๏ธ
