By this age, enough permanent teeth have usually appeared for an orthodontist to evaluate how the teeth, bite and jaws are developing. A check-up does not automatically mean braces, it can simply help identify concerns early.

These important chewing teeth can appear while baby teeth are still present, so they’re easy to overlook. Help children brush the grooves carefully, and ask their dentist whether protective sealants are appropriate.
