When archaeologists discovered King Tut’s tomb in 1922, his teeth were used to estimate his age.

By examining his wisdom teeth, researchers knew that King Tutankhamun was 18-22 years old when he was entombed. Archaeologists often utilize dental analysis as teeth are one of the most unique parts of the body. Their characteristics can indicate a person’s age, gender, ancestry, and more.

Since our enamel is so dense in minerals, teeth also remain preserved for a significant amount of time, making them incredibly helpful to archaeologists.

Check out the new Sulcabrushes we got at the office for our patients!

These single-tuft brushes are used in conjunction with floss to keep your gumline clean and healthy. Removing plaque from the base of each tooth is made simple with their specialized, soft bristles. By using these each day before you floss, you can avoid swollen, sore, or bleeding gums.

Sulcabrushes are not able to get between the contact of your teeth, which is why it is important to always use floss as well.

Did you know that Emeline Roberts was the first female to practice dentistry in North America?

After teaching herself to fill and extract teeth, she began shadowing her husband, Dr. Daniel Jones. Roberts then started working as a dental assistant in 1855 before opening her own practice in 1876. With her impressive knowledge, Roberts was able to grow this into one of the most successful dental offices in Connecticut at the time.

Did you know that teeth start developing before a child is born?

Just six weeks into a pregnancy, the first stage of oral development begins as the basic substance of each tooth starts to form. Then, the hard tissue grows around this. Finally, around six months after a child is born, each tooth erupts through their gums.

At this time, we recommend booking your child’s first dental appointment so we can begin laying a strong foundation for their oral development.

Did you know that biologists use dolphins’ teeth to understand how old they are?

As a dolphin ages, their teeth steadily grow each year. While this happens, lines accumulate on each tooth that show how many times they have increased in size. By simply counting the growth lines on each tooth, scientists can understand exactly how old the mammal is.

Your gums act as an anchor within your mouth that supports each tooth in place.

To maintain good oral hygiene, it is critical to keep your gums healthy. This is done by utilizing proper brushing techniques and upholding a daily flossing schedule. If you maintain these routines each day, your gums should:

• Be light-pink in colour
• Be firm when lightly pressed
• Not be swollen
• Not bleed when you brush or floss

If you notice your gums are deep-red in colour or often bleed, reach out to our team. We will offer at-home techniques to strengthen your gums and ensure they properly support your smile.
