Can’t Sit Still? Maybe It’s Time to Look at the Whole Picture.
When a child struggles to sit still, concentrate, or stay regulated at school, it’s easy to focus only on behaviour.
But what if we paused and asked a few more questions? 👀
😴 How are they sleeping?
👃 How are they breathing?
👄 Are they comfortably nasal breathing throughout the day?
🧍 What does their posture look like?
👅 How is their oral function?
🧠 Are there sensory or motor factors at play?
A child who is tired, uncomfortable, mouth breathing, or working harder than they should to maintain a comfortable posture may have a harder time staying focused and regulated.
This doesn’t mean breathing or oral function is the answer to every attention or behaviour concern. It means we shouldn’t overlook these important pieces when looking at the whole child.
💡 Before we simply say, “Focus!”—let’s ask, “What could be making it harder to focus?”
