Brushing with a fluoride toothpaste leaves a layer of protection that continues to protect your teeth once you’re done brushing. Rinsing with water directly after brushing can wash away that protective layer. So if you’re thirsty, make sure to have a glass of water before you brush to allow the toothpaste to do its job!

The Oral Cancer Foundation says 30% of all tooth decay in adults is caused by dry mouth. Here are some products that can help with dry mouth …

MOUTHWASH: Rinsing for 30 seconds with a mouthwash formulated for dry mouth can provide soothing moisture for up to four hours. You can use these alcohol-free mouthwashes up to five times daily to ease dryness.

LOZENGES: Dry mouth lozenges are easily popped anytime your mouth feels dry. Many contain a natural sweetener called xylitol, which helps stimulate salvia. Look for these in the diabetic section of the drugstore.

SPRAY: Dry mouth sprays are spritzed directly into your mouth for immediate hydration.

GEL: Dry mouth gels are applied directly to your tongue so you can spread the gel throughout your mouth to lubricate it.

DISCS: Dry mouth discs stick to your teeth or gums to keep your mouth hydrated. They slowly release xylitol, to increase saliva flow, and can even be worn overnight.
