Somewhere between the ages of 17 and 21, most young adults experience the eruption of their third molars (also known as wisdom teeth).

If wisdom teeth come in properly and there’s room for them in your mouth, they can help you chew. But crowded or partially-erupted wisdom teeth can lead to pain, infections, tooth decay, and cysts, in which case it’s best to have them removed for your own comfort and safety.

If you do wind up keeping your wisdom teeth past your mid to late twenties, we’ll continue to monitor them to make sure they don’t cause problems down the road.

It’s Active Aging Week! Since your teeth and gums continue to change as you get older, there are new challenges to watch for. Be sure to ask us about how to prevent gum disease, reduce your chance of developing cavities, treat dry mouth caused by medications, and check for early signs of oral cancer.

Cold and flu season is here! Following these tips can help lessen their effects on your oral health.

- For colds and coughs that can cause dry mouth, drink lots of water and suck on sugar-free cough drops or candies. Sugary drinks or candies can create the perfect environment for cavity-causing bacteria, but making healthy choices may help you feel better.
- For the stomach flu, rinse with water after vomiting because stomach acids can eat away at tooth enamel. Wait 30 minutes after vomiting before brushing your teeth.
- Stick to a regular brushing and flossing routine while you are sick to help you feel better.

Children’s baby teeth are very important. They help children speak, chew, and smile. They also hold space for their adult teeth that are still growing. If a baby tooth is lost too soon, it can affect the alignment of the adult teeth later. That’s why babies should go for their first dental exam after they get their first tooth. My tooth stopped hurting... do I still need to come in? 🦷

Short answer: Yes!

When a toothache suddenly disappears, it usually means the nerve inside has died—not that the issue went away. Decay or underlying infection can quietly continue beneath the surface.

Don't wait for the pain to come back! Give us a call 🌊✨

When wisdom teeth are impacted, it means they are prevented from growing in properly. This may be caused by a physical barrier, such as other teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems such as gum disease, decay, infections, cysts, or tumours.

If your wisdom teeth haven’t grown in, it doesn’t necessarily mean they are impacted. The teeth could simply be slow to develop or missing entirely. Every patient is different, so we examine the mouth and take X-rays to determine if the wisdom teeth are present and impacted. Visit our website for more information: orcafamilydentalcentre.com.

Tomorrow, September 30, our doors will be closed as we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. 🧡

This day originated from the story of Phyllis Webstad, a six-year-old girl whose new orange shirt was taken away on her first day of residential school in 1973. Today, the orange shirt serves as a visual symbol to remember that every child matters and that cultural identity should be protected and celebrated.

We encourage everyone to take a moment tomorrow to learn more about this history.

We look forward to welcoming you back during normal business hours on October 1st
