Did you know what a cavity looks like in cross section?

The enamel (the outer layer) is very hard and resistant, and can take time for bacteria to make their way through. However, the next layer (the dentin) is porous and soft, allowing the bacteria to progress to spread more quickly. A tiny hole in the enamel can be hiding a lot!
