Ankylosis of a primary tooth is a condition in which the root surface of a deciduous tooth becomes directly fused to the surrounding alveolar bone, with loss of the periodontal ligament. As a result, the tooth cannot erupt normally and often appears submerged or infraoccluded relative to adjacent teeth.

It most commonly affects primary mandibular second molars, followed by primary mandibular first molars.
