Here’s the truth…the reason behind WHY Dental Hygiene with Dezarae was created.

Earlier in my career, I worked within a traditional dental model where there was often pressure to “sell” dentistry and help fill the dentist’s schedule with high-value procedures.

My production was tracked, analyzed and compared to the next provider.

The conversations I had with patients were critiqued and sometimes listened to from the room beside me.

The focus was rarely on prevention or investigating the factors contributing to disease.

I didn’t have the autonomy to practise the way I envisioned.

NOW…

I have the freedom to provide care differently.

I can take the time to listen, ask more questions and look beyond what is happening in the mouth to better understand what may be contributing to it.

I can focus on preventing disease—not simply treating it once it develops.

I can choose technology because I believe it will improve patient care. I can continue advancing my education and bring that knowledge directly into the treatment room.

Most importantly, I can help patients feel heard, informed and actively involved in their own health.

What began as my personal vision has grown into the philosophy that guides the care provided throughout our practice.

For the past 9.5 years, Dental Hygiene with Dezarae has taught me what I’m truly capable of—and how much more we can deliver to our Huntsville community and beyond. 🤍

Does laser therapy cause discomfort during a dental hygiene appointment? 🔴

Most clients report feeling little to no sensation during treatment. Occasionally, someone may notice mild warmth or tingling, but laser therapy is generally very well tolerated.

At Dental Hygiene with Dezarae, laser therapy may be recommended alongside your hygiene care to help reduce bacteria in areas of inflamed or diseased gum tissue and support healing.

But it isn’t automatically added to every appointment.

Your care is guided by what we find—your gum measurements, bleeding, inflammation, health history and individual risk factors. The goal isn’t simply to clean your teeth. It’s to understand what is happening in your mouth and choose the care that best supports your long-term oral health.

When I became a dental hygienist more than 21 years ago, I expected to learn a lot about teeth and gums.

I didn’t expect to learn so much about fear, shame, trust, resilience and what people carry silently into the dental chair.

Experience has taught me to look beyond what is immediately visible—to ask better questions, listen more carefully and never assume I know someone’s full story.

The technical knowledge matters. But knowing how to make someone feel safe enough to participate in their own care matters just as much.

And after more than 21 years, I’m still learning. I’m continuing my education through a Bachelor of Science in Oral Health Promotion, Behavior and Business—expanding not only what I know, but how I can better support people in making meaningful changes to their health.

These are a few of the lessons my clients have taught me. ❤️

A tongue-tie release can create new movement—but the tongue still needs to learn how to use it. 👅

That’s where myofunctional therapy comes in.

Before a recommended release, we help prepare the tongue and surrounding muscles by improving awareness, coordination, strength and movement patterns. Afterward, therapy helps support healing and retrain the tongue for better function.

Our tongue-tie support may include:

• A comprehensive oral-function assessment
• Individualized preparation before the procedure
• Collaboration with the healthcare provider performing the release
• Post-release guidance and myofunctional therapy
• Support for tongue posture, swallowing, oral habits and nasal breathing

A release is not the entire treatment—it is one step within a carefully planned process. Every child is different, and not every restriction requires a release. Our focus is always on function first.

More than 40 years of combined dental hygiene experience—right here in Muskoka. 🦷

Meet Dezarae and Kristin, the registered dental hygienists at Dental Hygiene with Dezarae in Huntsville. 😷😷

Dezarae graduated in 2005 and has continued her education in periodontal health, laser and ozone therapy, oral cancer screening, airway and breathing health, and myofunctional therapy. She also serves as the Region B representative on the Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association Board of directors.

Kristin graduated in 2006 and brings two decades of dental hygiene experience to our team. She has training in laser and ozone therapy and has spent the past year working in orthodontics, expanding her experience with the oral hygiene needs associated with braces and other orthodontic appliances. She brings a warm, friendly and approachable manner to every appointment.

Together, our experience and continued education include:
