HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET YOUR TEETH CLEANED?

Cleaning Intervals are determined by many factors and are more accurately determined in person with an oral examination

3 MONTHS
- Oral habits are lacking. (Ex. Brushing x1 daily, rarely flossing or not at all)
- Presents with moderate-heavy build up and bleeding gums
- Many deep pockets
- Higher risk for gum disease (braces, pregnancy, adolescence, smoking)
- Health conditions such as diabetes, where oral health should be controlled or could affect overall health

4 MONTHS
- Oral habits still need improvement
- Presents with moderate build up and bleeding gums
- Mild amount of mildly deep pockets (slightly above average)
- Individuals who needed improvements on oral habits and have achieved good oral habits and healthy pocket readings potentially move from 3 month to 4 month

6 MONTHS
- Good consistent at home oral habits
- Presents with mild build up and bleeding gums
- Healthy gum pockets (1-3 mm)

I’d also like to add, those with insurance; when insurance companies claim you are covered for “6 months” or “9 months” - they are speaking about the DENTAL exam with the DENTIST. Many insurance companies cover you for 3 months, 4 months, & 6 month cleanings!!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BRUSHING TWICE DAILY.

You’d be surprised to know that many people only brush once a day, and mostly in the morning; thinking that they will have fresh breath for the day.

Night time is the MOST importance time to brush, when we sleep we don’t produce as much saliva (saliva components help fight against cavities). This causes a dry moist environment for bacteria to thrive. Increasing your risk for cavities and gum disease.

Ideally brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day help to maintain good oral health. As well as participating in time for your dental cleanings!!

THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL RADIOGRAPHS …

FIRST IMAGE: these radiographs are known as BITEWINGS; in adults 4 images in total are usually taken and in children it is 2 in total. We begin to take these around 6 years old. These help us thoroughly examine throughout and in between your teeth for cavities. Depending on your dentist, these can be taken every 2 years or every year if you’re more prone to cavities.

SECOND IMAGE: this radiograph is known as a PANORAMIC; we typically begin to take this at the age of 16 years old. This radiograph helps us thoroughly examine your jaw bone, sinuses, all your teeth and all the roots of your teeth. This helps us look out for any bone cysts and most commonly - impacted wisdom teeth. (Impacted wisdom teeth pictured with the green arrows and cavities with the red arrows). Depending on your dentist, this should be taken every 3-5 years.

THIRD IMAGE: this radiograph is known as a PERIAPICAL; these are taken to properly assess the tooth as a whole, mainly the root and helps us diagnose any cavities or tooth infections. (Cavity is pictured with the green arrow and infection is pictured with the blue arrow). These are usually recommended if you have persistent tooth pain or notice a bump on your gum.

FUN FACT: one set of 4 bitewings once a year is less radiation than an average daily dose of radiation in everyday life (source: epa.gov)

This past year has been very stressful for many, if you think you have been grinding or clenching your teeth, message me with questions or to book an appointment!

Abfraction: notches near the gun line that can become very sensitive and prone to cavities
Gum recession: when gums pull away from teeth exposing root surface, prone to sensitivity.
Attrition: loss of tooth structure, in severe cases can lead to tooth loss.
