March is Brain Health Awareness Month!

Dementia can be caused by Alzheimer's disease, other neurodegenerative diseases, strokes, severe infections, head injuries, and other conditions. Recent research found one-third of global dementia cases are linked to non-brain-related diseases, with periodontal (gum) disease identified as the single largest contributor, followed by chronic liver disease, hearing loss, and vision impairment.

These findings reinforce the importance of maintaining oral health to support long-term brain health. Registered dental hygienists play a critical role in preventing and managing periodontal disease, which benefits both oral and systemic health.
