October 6 is World Cerebral Palsy Day.

CP is the most common lifelong physical disability that starts in childhood, and no two people experience it the same way. Swipe through to learn what CP is, the 4 types, and how bracing at each functional level helps prevent deformity as kids grow.

The brain injury doesn't progress. The body keeps growing and changing. That's why bracing should be reviewed, not just fitted.

To everyone living with CP, and the families, therapists and clinicians beside them: no one flies solo. 💙

This is a Reaktiv PDE PTB AFO.

PTB means patellar tendon bearing. The brace takes some of your weight at the tendon just below your kneecap and carries it down to the ground. Research shows it can take about 10 to 50% of body weight off the lower leg and ankle, depending on design and fit.
Fun fact: this is the same trick used in below-knee prosthetic sockets. That tendon is built to handle pressure.

We don’t start here. A PTB is usually chosen after other braces have been tried. If an AFO is still causing pain, that’s a sign the ankle joint needs to be unloaded.
We often use them for:
• Compression fractures
• Chronic foot and ankle pain

The best part? It still feels light and springy. The carbon spring on the back bends and pushes back as you walk, and we can swap it to make the brace stiffer or softer.
Less load on the ankle. More time on your feet.

Note: This is day one. Tuning and gait training are still to come.

Meet the Goose Egg. 🪿

3D printed fidget, weirdly satisfying. Pure hand candy. Spin it, roll it, fidget it into oblivion.

Grab one next time you’re in. (Appointments running long suddenly hits different.)

What you see: parallel bars getting built. What they’re for: those first steps with a new device, the practice runs, the small adjustments that add up to real confidence. An O&P clinic is more than the brace itself. It’s everything behind the scenes that gets you ready to leave the nest. Consider this your runway 🪿

Sometimes a little velcro strap and an elastic lace makes all the difference between “I need help” and “I’ve got this.”

This is a carbon fiber KAFO, a knee-ankle-foot orthosis that supports the knee, ankle, and foot as one system to help patients stand and walk again.

Most KAFOs are plastic. It works, but it's heavy. For someone managing a neurological lower-limb condition (post-polio, MS, an incomplete spinal cord injury, stroke, a brain injury), every extra gram is extra effort. Carbon fiber keeps the strength and drops the weight, so movement takes less out of you.

The part you don't see: grinding carbon fiber throws off an ultra-fine dust you don't want in your lungs. So we gear up every time, with dust extraction, eye and skin protection, and a powered respirator that pushes filtered air behind a full face shield instead of relying on a mask's perfect seal.

It makes fittings and adjustments slower, gearing up and gearing down for every pass. But that's the job: messy at the grinder, clean and clinical for the client. We don't cut corners, we just cut carbon, carefully. 💨

Point-of-care access to medical imaging!

We now have direct access to medical imaging through eHealth Saskatchewan. Meaning we can review your X-rays in clinic, not just the written report.

This is a meaningful upgrade for the patients we see most: knees, spines, hips, and feet. Reports don't always tell the whole story. This helps improve our communication and decision-making with a sharper view.

Calling Saskatchewan families and clinicians

A research team at the University of Saskatchewan is studying pediatric walking assessment across our province . Looking at where the gaps are, what's working, and how services could better support kids and families.

If your child lives with a disability, injury, or diagnosis that affects how they walk (or you're a parent or support person of one), your experience matters here. The same goes for allied health professionals and physicians who work with these kiddos.
