Recent studies have uncovered a surprising connection between oral health and brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. One of the key culprits in this link is gum disease, or periodontitis, which is caused by the accumulation of harmful oral bacteria. These bacteria can travel from the mouth ...

Hey, it’s me, Amy, your local dental hygienist. 💁🏻‍♀️

I work Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

I have a husband and a baby that keep me busy on my days off.

I stay up till 2am every day, and then sleep till 10 when my baby gets up.

I drink coffee every day, and definitely prefer it to water (that’s my empty coffee cup).

I love reading, I love chatting, I love teeth!

I like everything grey, except teeth. I like those bright white.

Anyways that’s me, I hope you like it. Perhaps I’ll see you in my chair and I’ll get to know you too 🙋🏻‍♀️

Did you know gum disease can worsen diabetes?

Or how about how diabetes can worsen gum disease?

Diabetes and gum disease have what’s called a bidirectional relationship. Gum disease can increase blood sugar and make it harder to control sugar levels. And poorly controlled blood sugar levels lead to increased glucose in the saliva, promoting growth of bacteria that causes gum disease.

Another symptom of diabetes is delayed wound healing which can make it harder to reverse gum disease. Dry mouth is also a symptom which means less self cleansing or rinsing away of that bad bacteria which not only causes gum disease but can also cause cavities.

Majority clients with diabetes should be having dental hygiene appointments 2-4 times per year to ensure regular removal of the plaque and Tartar to reduce the risk of gums disease and cavities and in turn help control blood sugar levels.

How does teeth staining occur?

It occurs when stain particles, such as pigmented residue from food or drink, build-up in the film of protein (plaque or “slime layer”) that covers the tooth surface. Eventually the stain particles deposit themselves into the microscopic roughness of your enamel.

Surface stains are typically caused by to***co use or by regularly drinking coffee and tea, wine or cola drinks or consuming any strongly coloured food. If you can cut it on a cutting board and it leaves darkly coloured liquid behind (like berries) then it can stain your teeth.

Crest 3D white is a great toothpaste for this kind of surface staining!
