While lemons are a great source of Vitamin C and can help to prevent kidney stones, their high acidity can lead to multiple issues including sensitivity, yellowing of the teeth, and worst of all, actual destruction and loss of tooth structure. At Bow View Dental Care, we generally recommend avoiding adding lemon to your water to protect your teeth! But if you must, here are a few tips:

-Use a Straw: This can help minimize (but does not eliminate) the amount of acid coming into contact with your teeth.
-Rinse Immediately: Swish with plain water right after drinking.
-Wait to Brush: Don’t brush for at least 30–60 minutes after citrus. Brushing while enamel is "soft" causes more wear!
-Don’t Sip All Day: It’s better to drink it in one sitting than to expose your teeth to acid for hours.
-Alternatives: Try adding cucumber to your water instead of lemon!

Gingivitis is the earliest and mildest stage of gum disease, characterized by inflammation of the gingiva—the part of the gum surrounding the base of your teeth. It is primarily caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that irritates gum tissue. While it often develops painlessly, common warning signs include red, puffy gums and bleeding during brushing or flossing.

The good news? Gingivitis is reversible and can be managed to prevent permanent damage, such as tooth loss. Here are a few essential tips for your at-home routine:

-Brush twice daily for at least two minutes, ideally every morning and before bed.
-Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach.

In addition to home care, regular professional cleanings are essential. Hygienists remove hardened tartar (calculus) that brushing alone cannot reach. If it has been more than six months since your last visit, it’s time to book an appointment!
