Scaling vs Polishing: What’s the Difference

If you’ve ever been told you need scaling and polishing, you may have wondered whether they’re simply two names for the same thing. They’re often performed during the same appointment, but each serves a different purpose. Although they are often performed during the same visit, they serve different purposes.

Scaling focuses on removing plaque, tartar, and bacterial deposits from the teeth and around the gumline. Polishing, on the other hand, smooths tooth surfaces and helps remove certain external stains.

Understanding the difference between scaling vs polishing can help you better understand what happens during a professional dental cleaning and why your dental team may recommend one procedure, both procedures, or a more personalized approach based on your oral health needs.

Dental scaling removes tartar while polishing smooths teeth and removes surface stains. Discover how these procedures differ and when they are used.

How Much Does a Dental Cleaning Cost in Etobicoke

Most people think of a dental cleaning as a routine appointment, but it also gives your dental team a chance to remove buildup that brushing and flossing cannot fully address. Many people searching for a dentist in Etobicoke want to know how much a cleaning appointment will cost before booking a visit.

Dental cleaning fees are usually based on the services required during the appointment. Factors such as tartar buildup, gum health, diagnostic needs, and appointment length can all influence the final treatment estimate.. The cost of a dental cleaning depends on the type of care needed, the amount of buildup present on the teeth, whether additional services are recommended, and the time required to complete treatment.

Because every smile is different, a dental team typically evaluates your oral health before providing an accurate estimate.

Dental Cleaning for Kids: What Parents Should Know

A kids dental cleaning helps remove plaque, surface stains, and calculus that regular brushing cannot always remove. During the visit, the dental team can also check your child’s teeth and gums, assess cavity risk, review brushing and flossing habits, and recommend preventive treatments such as fluoride when appropriate.

A child’s appointment can also give the dental team an opportunity to examine the teeth and gums, assess cavity risk, reinforce home-care habits, and decide whether treatments such as fluoride are appropriate.
