We have a long way to go to get to $27 as the wage for all shoreworkers! UFAWU rates are better than others but still the 400 hour rate is $2 short of a living wage in Vancouver. Next year we negotiate a new contract- we need to keep this in mind!

The voices of BC workers were heard loud and clear at this morning's budget consultations. Along with leaders from several BC unions, Sussanne told the the BC Legislature's finance committee that workers are under tremendous pressure. They need to see a government response that recognizes how urgent the situation is.

She underlined three key priorities. One is to bring privatized public services back under public control, to save money and gain more accountability. That includes transit, health labs and expanding the list of projects covered by Community Benefits and Project Labour Agreements.

Another is affordability, with measures such as affordable public childcare and funding for the government branch that ensures workers get the wages and fair treatment they're entitled to.

And the third is investing in physical and social infrastructure British Columbians have been waiting for, from long-term care beds to public schools.

Workers, she said, "are looking for a budget that shows this government understands the urgency of the challenges in ther lives. One that invests where investment is needed and generates revenue where the capacity exists. One that says: We’re on your side."

Herring for a Great Cause! 🐟

The 15th Annual Fishermen Helping Kids With Cancer Herring Sale is back tentatively on Saturday, January 17th!

This is more than just a seafood sale, it’s a powerful example of how our local fishing community steps up. Thanks to the fleet covering all operating costs (fuel, ice, and labor), 100% of purchases go directly to BC Children’s Hospital.

Since 2011, this event has raised over $1.5 million to provide comfort and technology for kids undergoing cancer treatment.

When & Where:
🗓️ Saturday, ***Jan 10*** postponed to Jan 17!
📍 Victoria: FinestAtSea (27 Erie St) - 7am: first-come, first-served.
📍 Steveston: Steveston Harbour (12820 Trites Rd, Richmond) - Advance tickets required (check fhkwc.ca).

Whether you’re pickling, smoking, or grilling, this "Best Choice" sustainable herring tastes better when you know it’s benefiting the community.

We remember.

It was January 7, 1981. Four construction workers went to work in downtown Vancouver and never came home.

Gunther Couvreux (age 49), Brian Stevenson (age 21), Donald Davis (age 35) and Yrjo Mitrunen (age 46) died that day, having fallen from the 36th storey of the Bentall IV tower where they had been working on a platform on the side of the building.

May this tragic event never be forgotten. May it serve as a reminder of the persistent dangers of construction work. May it encourage our continued call for better safety enforcement at our worksites.

Join the memorial ceremony today at Art Phillips Park in Vancouver at 12pm. Or livestream the event at https://video.ibm.com/channel/E9VSYu3DSSC
