Joni, Kim, and Lori, what would we do without you. We are so lucky to have three hygienists who genuinely care for their patients. They not only care about their oral health but also their lives, families, and goals. Thank you for everything you do, ladies! Starring Dr. V's photobomb.

A recent article in the Canadian Dental Association journal highlighted that there is in fact an optimal diet for oral health. An anti-inflammatory diet which is low in carbohydrates, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C and D, antioxidants and fibre reduces the abundance of bacteria that cause both tooth decay and gum disease.

Dr. Johan Wolber did a small randomized control trial where an experimental group ate this anti-inflammatory diet for four weeks and did not brush or floss during this time. He found that even without removing the plaque this diet reduced gingival inflammation to a clinically relevant level.

In order to make this a realistic lifestyle change Dr. Wolber said that his family eats plant-based whole foods at home but don’t forbid themselves from enjoying other foods outside the home.

4 years!

Today marks 4 years since I took over Calgary Fine Dentistry. What a journey it has been taking the practice started and grown by my mum (Dr. Jennifer Maguire) and making it my own while still keeping the vision and values it was built on. There have definitely been ups and downs along the way but I am so thankful to everyone who has helped me get the practice to where we are today! I love going in every day to work with our outstanding team and connect with our patients.

This fall we started a little refresh of our space. It is still a work in progress and don’t have our decorating complete but here is a sneak peak of the changes we have made. Thanks to Ashley for guiding our refresh!

Carbonated water has gotten more and more popular in recent years. But unfortunately, carbonated water is more acidic than regular water and increases the risk of cavities. CBC Marketplace studied to see which carbonated water brands and flavours may be doing the most damage.

Every time you eat or drink (other than tap water) the pH of your mouth goes down and produces a more cavity prone environment. The saliva is a natural buffering system that brings the pH of your mouth back up and usually takes about 20 minutes. But if you are sipping on a fizzy water all day the saliva is not able to give this protective effect.

This doesn't mean you can never have your favourite bubbly drink. However, I would recommend to drink it at a meal time when you are already causing a dip in your mouth's pH, drink it in one sitting rather than sipping on it all day and swish your mouth with tap water afterwards.
