You may have heard us mention IPR during treatment—so what is it, and why do we do it? IPR (Inter-proximal Reduction) is a safe and precise technique where we gently reshape small amounts of enamel between certain teeth to create just enough space for proper alignment.

At Impressions Orthodontics, we use IPR to help your smile move efficiently and naturally—often avoiding the need for extractions while improving your final results. IPR can play an important role in achieving a healthy, balanced smile.

Why we may recommend IPR:

To reduce crowding and create space for alignment
To improve how your teeth fit together (your bite)
To enhance the final shape and symmetry of your smile

IPR is quick, comfortable, and carefully planned as part of your personalized Calgary Orthodontics treatment.

Getting braces can be a bit uncomfortable, especially in the first 24 hours. Here’s what you need to know:

Why Do Braces Hurt at First?
- Your teeth are starting to move, which puts pressure on them.
- Your gums and cheeks may feel sore from the brackets and wires.
- Your mouth is adjusting to a new object, which can cause mild irritation.

How Long Will It Hurt?
The first 24 to 72 hours are usually the most uncomfortable.

The pain typically peaks in the first 24 hours and then improves over a few days.

How to Reduce the Pain
✅ Take pain relievers – Over-the-counter meds like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help.
✅ Eat soft foods – Stick to mashed potatoes, yogurt, soup, or smoothies. Avoid crunchy or hard foods.
✅ Use orthodontic wax – If brackets or wires irritate your cheeks, wax can prevent sores.
✅ Rinse with salt water – This helps soothe sore gums and any irritation.
✅ Cold compress or ice water – A cold pack on your jaw or sipping ice water can numb the pain.

When to Call Your Orthodontist
- If the pain is severe or lasts more than a week.
-If a bracket or wire is poking painfully into your cheek or gums.

It gets easier! After the first few days, your mouth will start adjusting, and future adjustments won’t be as painful. As usual our text line is always open for follow up questions. 587-875-0830
