Dental X-rays help dentists see what’s happening beneath the surface, and each type serves a different purpose.
Panorex (panoramic): A full view from sinuses to chin. It shows jaw joints, bone levels, infections, and overall tooth health. Typically taken every 3–5 years, or sooner if there’s trauma. Not used for detecting cavities.
Bitewings: Routine X-rays (usually yearly) that check for cavities, tartar buildup, and bone loss in the back teeth.
Periapical: Focused on a few teeth. Used to examine roots, front teeth, and specific problem areas, especially if there’s pain.
