Think your first dental hygiene visit with me will be a quick “check-up”?
Not quite.
During your initial visit, the first thing I am doing is a comprehensive assessment that plays a critical role in preventing, identifying, and managing oral and systemic health conditions.
Here’s what I’ll do:
🩺 We’ll start with your medical history
I’ll ask about any health conditions, meds, and allergies—because your body and mouth work together. I’ll also take your blood pressure.
📖 I’ll go over your oral health history
We’ll chat about past dental work, your oral hygiene habits, and any concerns you have. We will review any goals you have for your oral health.
📷 I’ll take diagnostic photos
Using high-resolution images, I’ll capture the condition of your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. These photos help track changes over time and make it easier to show you what I see.
📸 I’ll take x-rays
They help me spot issues I can’t see just by looking in your mouth — like bone loss, calculus under your gums, infections, or hidden cavities between your teeth.
👄 I’ll do an oral cancer screening
I'll be looking at all the surfaces of your lips, cheeks, tongue, roof and floor of your mouth for any abnormalities. It’s fast and painless, but important for early detection.
🦷 Then I’ll do a clinical exam
I’m recording all your existing oral health conditions, previous fillings and other restorative work, and checking for any new cavities.
📏 I’ll do a periodontal evaluation
That means measuring gum pockets, checking for bleeding and bone loss, assessing mobility, and seeing if there’s any damage to the supporting structures.
🪥 I’ll look at how you care for your teeth at home
Your brushing and flossing routine is a big deal. I’ll show you what’s working and ways to improve. Consistency is KEY.
📋 And I’ll wrap it up with a discussion, diagnosis and a prevention plan. We will review all my findings together on the big screen so you can visualize the findings and ask questions. We will also cover topics about airway issues, clenching and grinding, to***co use, and dietary influences. I will create a treatment plan customized for you and your goals.
So—when was your last dental hygiene exam? Did it cover all this?
If it seems thorough, it's because it is. It's because it should be.
