What is a CBCT and how does it benefit my treatment?

CBCT stands for Cone Beam Computed Tomography, where the scanner rotates around the patient’s head, obtaining up to nearly 600 images to create a volumetric data set. The scanning software collects the data and reconstructs it, producing what is termed a digital volume that can then be manipulated and visualized with specialized software. This allows Endodontists to see more clearly what the issues are within your tooth and to see how tooth infection is affecting the surrounding bone. Often these issues are not visible on regular X-rays. CBCT has been described as the gold standard for imaging the oral and maxillofacial area.

Working with Calgary and area Dentists, we always recommend the right procedures to our dental partners to best treat their patients. We believe that good dentistry begins with good communication and we are always available by phone or email to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Additionally, if you have specific treatment requests (such as leaving one canal free of filling material so that you can later place a post) we appreciate keeping the lines of communication open so that we know either through a referral form or through email exactly what your goals are prior to the treatment date of your patients. We will always ask you if you have a specialist (ie: Oral Surgeon, Periodontist, Oral Medicine Specialist) you prefer to work with before referring your patients for further examination or to ask if your office would prefer to place any dental implants recommended.

What are the benefits of saving natural teeth vs implants?
Implants are a terrific option if you cannot save your natural teeth, but implants can also have complications. Some things to consider:
a) The tissue attachment around implants is weaker and implants are therefore more susceptible to tissue breakdown which can result in peri-implantitis (infection around an implant) or implant failure (loosening of the implant itself and eventual loss).
b) There is less blood flow around an implant so if peri-implantitis occurs around an implant, the tissue healing after treatment is slower and less predictable than around a natural tooth.
c) Implants do not have periodontal ligaments (which natural teeth have) to act as a shock absorber, transferring biting loads to the bone. As a result, implants are more likely to have mechanical complications such as screw loosening, fracture, and bone necrosis—when excessive biting pressure is applied (grinding, chewing ice, etc).

Meet Our Team

Dr. Shannon Davis - DMD, MBA, MSc, FRCD(c)

Dr. Davis loves to see people smile. Prior to commencing graduate studies at UBC, Dr. Davis worked as a general dentist in Calgary and the area for over a decade. She owned her own practice in downtown Calgary and then after the birth of her daughter, practiced as an associate dentist.

A proud Calgarian and active community volunteer, Shannon has served as a board member for non-profit organizations including the Calgary & District Dental Society where she served as president in 2020-2021.

In her spare time, Dr. Davis enjoys golfing, hiking and downhill skiing with her husband and daughter. She also loves to travel and has done volunteer dentistry in Jamaica and Honduras.

Our logo symbolizes what Dr. Davis does and who she is. If you look at our logo from afar, you can see the outline of a tooth and on the inside is a form of Haida Gwaii First Nations art. Dr. Davis is First Nations and has had the opportunity to perform dental treatment for the Haida Gwaii First Nation while completing her Endodontic specialty at UBC. The owl also symbolizes wisdom and insight, which is what we count on to treat challenging teeth.

Westside Endodontics strives to provide emergency care if you are experiencing a toothache due to a dental abscess or infection; or a broken tooth due to trauma from a fall or impact to the face. Depending on your emergency situation, you may require a lengthier procedure, or a series of appointments to fully treat the problem. During your initial consultation, our goal is to relieve the immediate pain and achieve comfort until we complete the proper care.
