Lets Chat Night guards! Also known as occlusal splints or bite guards, offer several benefits, primarily aimed at addressing issues related to teeth grinding (bruxism) and other related dental problems. Here are the key benefits of night guards:

Teeth Protection:
Night guards act as a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, preventing wear and damage caused by grinding and clenching during sleep.

Prevention of Tooth Damage:
By providing a cushioning effect, night guards help prevent chipping, cracking, and fractures of the teeth resulting from the forces generated during bruxism.

Reduced Jaw Pain and Discomfort:
Night guards help alleviate jaw pain, soreness, and tension by redistributing the forces created by clenching and grinding, thus reducing the strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Prevention of Headaches and Migraines:
Bruxism is often associated with tension headaches and migraines. Night guards can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches by minimizing the impact of clenching on the head and neck muscles.

Muscle Relaxation:
Night guards promote muscle relaxation by providing a stable and even surface for the jaws to rest on during sleep, reducing muscle tension associated with bruxism.

Protection for Dental Restorations:
Individuals with dental restorations such as crowns, bridges, or veneers can benefit from night guards as they help protect these restorations from premature wear and damage.

Prevention of TMJ Disorders:
Night guards can contribute to the prevention of temporomandibular joint disorders by minimizing the stress on the jaw joint caused by clenching and grinding.

Improved Sleep Quality:
By reducing the discomfort and disruptive effects of bruxism, night guards can contribute to improved sleep quality, allowing individuals to wake up feeling more rested.

Prevention of Enamel Erosion:
Bruxism can lead to enamel erosion over time. Night guards act as a shield, preventing direct contact between the upper and lower teeth and minimizing enamel wear.

Customized Fit for Comfort:
Custom-made night guards provide an individualized fit, ensuring comfort, ease of use, and increased likelihood of regular use.

Reduction of Snoring:
In some cases, night guards designed to reposition the jaw may help reduce snoring, contributing to a quieter and more restful sleep environment for both the individual and their sleep partner.

The Canadian Dental Association is conducting a study to further prove the health concerns surrounding sugary diets among our children. This generation of parents has come along ways from sending their children to school with “gushers”, sugar filled juices and things that you’d consider “junk food”. However the latest culprits are baked goods, granola bars and the accumulation of hidden sugar in our diets throughout the day. Whole foods, free of packaging are the answer (anyone actually surprised?). And surprisingly healthy Dad’s are leading the charge in helping their children practice healthier eating habits!

According to Dr. Laura Dempster, associate professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry, if you really want to maximize how effective your oral hygiene regime is, she says to give your teeth their most thorough clean before bed. We produce less saliva—which protects our teeth—while we sleep. Deeper flossing and longer time spent brushing the harder to reach areas can be more impactful anytime you brush, but especially before you catch your Zzzz’s! 💤😴💤🦷🪥🦷🪥🦷

Hip-ity Hop! Easter weekend is upon us and the office is closed Friday and Monday (as usual). Fun fact about our North America Easter candy consumption (prepare to have your mind blown), Each Easter season, Americans buy more than 700 million Marshmallow Peeps, shaped like chicks, making them the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy. Has anyone ever tried a dusty old Peep and thought to themselves, “wow this is so good” and then you multiply that by SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE?!! In a world where mini-eggs exist it’s a little hard to believe that this many people enjoy peeps. Perhaps a bit of a controversial opinion, but worthy of sharing before we all go to town on sweets this weekend!

April is here! Have you had your teeth cleaned in the last 6 months? If not 📞403-286-4033. Teeth cleanings are essential because they remove hardened plaque from your teeth along with stains and tartar that regular brushing and flossing are not able to remove. If you suffer from or are more prone to gum disease, your visits should be every 3 months. More info on gum disease coming soon!

Cosmetic bonding, aka Composite bonding or dental bonding is a modern way to restore teeth, either for cosmetic reasons, or to build up tooth structure that has been lost. It involves bonding a tooth coloured resin material to existing teeth to reshape them or improve their colour. We bond on very strongly the resin material, polish it up, and this will last for many years. You might consider cosmetic bonding if you have the following concerns:

•To repair decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities)

•To repair chipped or cracked teeth

•To improve the appearance of discolored teeth

•To close spaces between teeth

•To make teeth look longer

•To change the shape of teeth

•As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings

•To protect a portion of the tooth's root that has been exposed when gums recede

You can’t run or hide from this little virus, so it is time we start living with it! We are confident in our office’s fine-tuned preventive measures that have protected us and our patients for over two years now. As a staff we’re not ready to go back to a pre-pandemic lifestyle. As a high-transmission work environment, letting our guard down now seems risky for us and everyone that comes through our door. In other words, nothing has changed! Keep sanitizing and wearing masks, and we will see you at the next appointment, and here are some extra 😀😀😀😀 emojis because you haven’t seen Kerrie’s beautiful smile in over 740ish days!
